Hi everybody, this is my first message here.
I have Myst installed on windows xp. Instalation went ok and it works fine but as soon as I try to save the game.. Crash! (it doesn't even give any error message).
I tried changing compatibility stuff, but that didn't work.
HELP!!!

You may have a hardware and/or driver problem. If you'll post a DxDiag report in this topic, we can take a look at your system and maybe spot something. The report will be long, but post *all* of it!

To post a DxDiag report:
1. Click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box.
3. Click OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step!
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility.
8. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it.
Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard.
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic.
-- a. Click on the yellow Reply arrow in the lower right corner of the screen.
-- b. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box, type in any details that might help diagnose the problem.
-- c. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and two lines down from the details, then right-click.
-- d. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
-- e. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard.

Questions:

1. Are you playing Myst Masterpiece Edition (DVD version, part of 10th Anniversary DVD Edition)? If not, which Myst version do you have?

2. When Myst crashes:
-- a. Does it crash to the Desktop?
-- b. Do you get a black screen?
-- c. Do you get a QuickTime error?

3. To which of your hard drive partitions (C:, D:, G: ) did you install Myst?

4. When you installed Myst, did you accept the install defaults, or did you specify a non-default location for game saves?

1. I really don't know which version I have because I just found the the old cd among many others...
The only thing i can say is that is not the Masterpiece edition.

2. Yes it crashes to the desktop, without any error message.

3. I tried to install it both in c: and D:, but nothing changed.

4. I installed it without changing default options

Suggestions:

Before doing any of the following, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications. Do NOT boot up with the Myst disc in the drive, or any disc in either drive.

1. To determine which Myst version you have:
-- a. Start Myst.
-- b. Move the cursor to the upper left corner of the screen to bring up the taskbar.
-- c. Click on Options > About. You should have version 1.1.
-- d. Click on OK.

If you have version 1.1, do the rest of the suggestions. If you do not have version 1.1, post back with your version number before proceeding.

2. Rather than saving using Ctrl-S, use Save As....
-- a. Disable your anti-virus software.
-- b. Start Myst.
-- c. Move the cursor to the upper left corner of the screen to bring up the taskbar.
-- d. Click on File > Save As....
----- 1. The save path should be C:\Myst\Savegame or D:\Myst\Savegame. If it isn't, make it so.
----- 2. The default save filename is Myst.mys. Either use that filename or type in something like Myst1.mys.
-- e. Click on OK to save.

3. If suggestion 2 does not help, install Myst to your G: drive.
-- a. Uninstall Myst.
----- 1. Open Windows (not Internet) Explorer, and browse to your Myst folder (C:\MYST or D:\MYST).
----- 2. Delete the Myst folder.
----- 3. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.
-- b. Install Myst to drive G:.
----- 1. Insert the Myst disc into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed.
----- 2. Click on Start > Run, and browse to MSSETUP.EXE on the Myst disc.
----- 3. Double-click on MSSETUP.EXE to put this file in the Open: box.
----- 4. Click on OK to run it.
----- 5. Click on Continue > Set Location, and change the install location to G:\MYST.
----- 6. Click on Continue > Continue to complete the install.
----- 7. Click on the X in the upper right corner of the "You've successfully installed: Myst" box to prevent QuickTime from being installed.
----- 8. Close the Broderbund Software shortcut listing panel.
-- c. Set the Program Compatibility options for Myst.
----- 1. Open Windows Explorer and browse to G:\MYST.
----- 2. Right-click on MYST.EXE, and click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
----- 3. Click on the Compatibility tab.
----- 4. Under Compatibility mode, click on the "Run theis program in compatibility mode for:" box to put a check in it, and select Windows 95 as the mode.
----- 5. Under Display settings, click on the "Run in 256 colors" and "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution" boxes to put checks in them.
----- 6. Click on Apply > OK.
-- d. Disable your anti-virus software.
-- e. Start Myst. Go to the switch at the base of the steps, click on it, then do a Save As....

If the above did not help, do the following.

4. Check all of your drives (C:, D:, G: ) for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP. Another option is Symantec's Norton SystemWorks - Norton Utilities Disk Doctor.
-- a. Remove the Myst disc from the drive.
-- b. Close all running programs before starting the error check, and tell Windows to automatically fix file system errors.
-- c. Reboot when finished error checking.
-- d. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- e. Insert the Myst disc into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed.
-- f. Disable your anti-virus software.
-- g. Start Myst. Go to the switch at the base of the steps, click on it, then do a Save As....

5. Clear your Internet Explorer caches.
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

Use Windows Explorer to search all hard drives (search at least your C: drive) for \temp folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If you can delete a file in a temp folder, it's not in use - if it's in use, Windows won't let you delete it.
-- a. Close all open applications, and open Windows Explorer.
-- b. Click on Search (top toolbar) > All files and folders.
----- 1. Click on More advanced options.

-- f. For your C: drive, double-click on a temp folder to open it, in the Name column for:

----- C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings
----- C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings
----- C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents
----- C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings
----- C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings
-- g. Delete files in the temp folder that aren't currently in use. Also delete files in subfolders contained in temp folders.
----- 1. After deleting a folder/subfolder's files, click on the white Back arrow (in the green circle, top taskbar) to go back to the search results. It may take a few seconds for the results list to refresh.
----- 2. Open another temp folder and delete its files.
----- 3. Repeat until all of the above temp folders have been emptied.
-- h. Repeat for your D: and G: drives.
-- i. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.

Empty the Recycle Bin.
-- a. From the Desktop, right-click on the Recycle Bin.
-- b. Click on Open to view the Bin's contents.
-- c. Click on any file that was deleted by mistake.
-- d. Click on File > Restore.
-- e. Repeat as necessary.
-- f. Click on File > Close.
-- g. Right-click on the Recycle Bin.
-- h. Click on Empty Recycle Bin.
-- i. Click on Yes to confirm file deletion.

After completing all of suggestion 5, disable your anti-virus software, and start Myst. Go to the switch at the base of the steps, click on it, then do a Save As....

I actually have 1.3 vesrsion. Do I have to do something different than what you've posted?

The above should work with your verison 1.3.
