I recently brought the MYST collection box set and when installing MYST the masterpiece it seemed to go ok. Everything was successful, including quicktime and DirectX - Apparently. When I go to play the game it loads up as a black screen for a couple seconds and then goes straight back to my desktop with no error message. I've tried re-installing a couple times along with quicktime but no luck. So I installed Riven and that went well. I could actually play that! - And then the next day I go to play Riven again and it says that it cannot find riven.exe. Yay?

Why couldn't you find the Riven.exe the day after playing? In the interim, did you maybe install an earlier Windows Restore Point, or use some sort of disk cleanup program that deleted Riven.exe, or install another program that corrupted the Riven installation? Or? Otherwise, who knows what happened....

Your "MYST collection" could be either "Myst: The Collection" with Riven on 5 CD's, or the "Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition" with Riven on a DVD. Try the following:
-- a. Right-click on the Riven start icon, and click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
-- b. In the Target: box, you should see:
----- 1. For CD Riven, "C:\Program Files\Riven\Riven.exe".
----- 2. For DVD Riven, "C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Riven\Riven.exe".
-- c. In the Start in: box, you should see:
----- 1. For CD Riven, "C:\Program Files\Riven".
----- 2. For DVD Riven, "C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Riven".
-- d. Click on the Find Target... box. Assuming you did a default installation, you should see the file listing:
----- 1. For CD Riven, C:\Program Files\Riven, with Riven.exe highlighted.
----- 2. For DVD Riven, C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Riven, with Riven.exe highlighted.
-- e. If Windows CAN find Riven.exe, check to see that the Start in: box shows the correct path for your version of Riven. If not, type in the correct path, including the quotes. Check carefully for typos. Click on Apply > OK, and try starting Riven.
-- f. If Windows can NOT find Riven.exe:
----- 1. If the Target: box does not show the correct path for your version of Riven, type in the correct path, including the quotes. Check carefully for typos. (If the Start in: box does not show the correct path for your version of Riven, type in the correct path, including the quotes.) Click on Apply > OK, and try starting Riven.
----- 2. If the Target: box path is correct and Riven.exe isn't found, re-install Riven.


Regarding the Myst Masterpiece black screen, you may have a hardware and/or driver problem. If you'll post a DxDiag report in this topic, we'll take a look at your system and maybe spot something. The report will be long, but post *all* of it!

To post a DxDiag report:
1. Click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box.
3. Click OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step!
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it.
8. Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard.
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic.
-- a. Click on the yellow Reply arrow in the lower right corner of the screen.
-- b. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box, type in any additional details that might help diagnose the problem.
-- c. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and two lines down from the additional details, then right-click.
-- d. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Hi, I have the same problem as the person who posted before you. Whenever I try to load Myst Masterpiece on my system I just get a black screen but I can hear sound.

As a first pass, try installing the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, and then install the latest video driver from Dell for your Inspiron 9300. Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. The installer (dxwebsetup.exe) for the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c is available here.
----- 1. Click on the Continue box to validate your copy of Windows and allow the download process to continue.
----- 2. On the download page, click on the Download box, then click on Run > Run.
----- 3. Accept the license agreement, and click on Next.
----- 4. When installation is complete, close back to the Desktop and reboot.
-- c. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- d. The latest driver from Dell for your NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 video chipset is R121867.EXE (version 84.30, released 4/12/2006), available here.
----- 1. Scroll down the page to the Installation Instructions for details on downloading and installing R121867.EXE.
----- 2. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- e. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- f. Insert the MME disc into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed.
-- g. Click on the MME start icon to start the game.
