At this point it is proper for you to describe your machine. Win XX or Mac XX, graphics card and memory, system memory, etc. Then folks may have something to work with to help you.

windows XP home edition service pack 2 for O/S memory is 1.5GB maximum allowed for ax34 momboard vid card is radeon 9000 and audio card is soundblaster live p3 933mhz processor. more than eno8ugh to run all this. quicktime 7 is what i have on here and i had the audio accelator at full function when everything crashed out on me and the sound problem too so i turned that down to minimal operation and that took care of sound and maybe system crash too iwas finally able to get through to the end i think.

Thanks bluecloud,

I ran the dxdiag and turn both Sound 1 and Sound 2 to 'Basic' and 'No Acceleration' Sound on No acc is poor But I tried.
Still get the crash in exactly the same place!!
Now beginning to wonder whether it is worth going back and restart from an earlier saved game.
Crashes on Stoneship Before and After going to the crows nest and turning on the right pump. Then returning to the lighthouse. I cannot get to the key/ladder inside the lighthouse.

If I switch the centre or left switch I can at least progress.. how far be4 it crashes again??

I'm having this problem too. As soon as I hit the down button in the elevator in Machine Age (The age that you get to with the book in the huge Gear) it just plain locks up on me. I can still move the mouse, I can alt tab and see all the programs that are running in the background but I can't switch control out of Myst. I have to just reboot every time. It seems Ubi customer support knows nothing of how to fix it either. I just ordered my copy of real myst though so I guess screw myst MP...

Try running Myst in Windows compatibility mode. (See How to use the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows XP for details.) Try at least Windows 95 and Windows 98/Me modes. For each of these two modes, select in sequence:
-- a. 'Run in 256 colors', and play Myst.
-- b. 'Run in 256 colors', 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution', and play Myst.
-- c. 'Run in 256 colors', 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution', and 'Disable visual themes' and play Myst.

My game crashed when I flipped back and forth between windows- to check email and such. When I stopped doing that I made it through without problems.

In general, the Myst series games don't like the use of Alt-Tab to sequence through open apps and the Desktop.

Running games in Windowed mode (if that's an option) usually minimizes problems if you absolutely must use Alt-Tab.

see if your hardware accelerator is at maximum on your sound card.I found that myst plays the sounds best with the accelerator at minimum but not off if you have winxp and creative soundblaster live. older soundcards porbably handle it better or is it the newer ones? can find that in control panel under sound devices in advnced tab.

I have played uru trilogy and myst 5 and the first 2:myst and riven of this 3 game series and the only game that gave me problems from switching between windows and the game is this last one;exile. just posting this as information that some games can be played switching between windows. i guess it depends on the indivdual system.

Since it causes failures is why the warning about not trying to flip in and out of the game has been posted.
