I can not immagine what I will have to go thru to load the other 2 games.
Someone please make it simple. Will UBI send me a direct click and play ?? I want it to introduce it to my grandson who is 10! I am anxious. Help please.

Hi joshsgran1,
Welcome to forum. Could you give some details of what is happening when you try to install the game. Any errors? What kind of computer? Any information you give us an idea of what kind of computer, video, or something to get us going in the right track to help you. If you can get a dirX diag of your computer would help.

Where do you go to get that?

Thank you for your help! I have Windows XP and HP Computer. Do not know more than that. We have added memory. etc. Tried to search to find what diagnostics I have and I do not know where to look as far as sound card etc. :-) My error message was:

Myst has encounted a problem and needs to close We are sorry for the inconvenience. Then it has DEBUG and CLOSE as options.

I finally got it loaded to the computer and have the icons. But when you click icon you get first screen and I click play and the screen went black. My computer then had to be rebooted.
Very frustrating.

I almost made it thru Myst on Broaderbund disc but I have lost it in moving. and I was so anxious to start again. Really excited there are more to follow.

I do not understand how to do all the recommendations I have read in this forum. My computer is 5 years old and maybe cannot handle these games. Which is going to be a bummer for me. Please advise me. whisper

From Heimdall G,
quote:

How to post a DxDiag report
------------------------
If you have already started a topic (aka "Discussion") about your problem, please DO NOT start a new topic for your DxDiag report. Instead, post the report in your existing topic!

1. Press keys (win) + R, or click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box.
3. Click OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step!
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility.
8. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it.
Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard:
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in your existing topic (or start a new topic, if necessary):
-- a. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box (or the Message: box for a new topic), type in an explanation of your problem.
-- b. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and one line down from your explanation, then right-click.
-- c. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
-- d. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard.

Here is what I did and mine now runs great, after 2 years of all kinds of stuff here ya go. First uninstall the game. Then put the cd in and right click on the cd drive click explore and just install direct x7, I have 9 but I installed it any way, did not delete 9. Then go get the bink and indeo 5.1 codecs, install them (google them rad tools is what bink is now a days and the indeo is 5.1. Go to windows explorer (your C drive) and delete the mattel folder. Right click and make a new folder named Realmyst. Reboot. Then reinstall the game, but when it asks what folder to put it in use the realmyst you created, it gives you a brouse option. after 2 years that is all it took. I tried new video drivers, all kinds of stuff, but I think it was the installing it in a different folder that made the difference.

rob3394,

I think that the original poster is trying to play Myst Masterpiece, not RealMyst, so your advice will probably not apply in this case.

Thank you but after all this discussion. I had no clue as to what is to be done. I finally went and purchased Myst from Broderbund. It loaded fast and I thought I was on my way. NOT !
It is giving me an error on both my computers.
:Requires 2256 color palettized display driver"
Now what??? I googled that. It seems like a dead end to me. I am trying now to contact Broderbund for help. Can you direct me as to what that means? At least you answer the questions I have. I had Broaderbund when I had Windows 95 and did not have all this trouble?
Thanking you in advance for your help. Linda

If you bought the ORIGINAL Myst, 1993 version, and not Myst Masterpiece, you will need to set your color display to 256 colors. That is probably what your error message refers to.

You will also need to install the version of QuickTime included on the Myst discs; the original Myst cannot run using modern versions of QuickTime. In general, it is more difficult to run the original Myst on modern hardware and software than to run Myst Masterpiece, which has been updated to accommodate later versions of QuickTime and to set the color palette for you.

Thank you! I did install the Quick Time on a computer without any Quick Time and the error message was about the pallette, then I took the Broderbund version and installed on my newest computer and the same error message was given. However, the Masterpiece version is still on the newest computer too. I wish you lived right next door. I will go take off the Quick Time and Myst and make sure there is not another version and start over. Thank you so much for such a quick reply. This forum is a blessing! Linda

Try this:

- Install Myst and the Quicktime that came with it. Follow all the defaults it gives you.

- Right-click on the Myst desktop icon and select "properties"

- Select the "compatibility" tab and check the "run this program in compatibility mode for" box and select Windows 95

- Select the "run in 256 colors" box

- Play Myst.

If this doesn't work, try Windows 98/Me compatibility mode instead of Win 95, as well as various combinations of the three display settings boxes.
