Did a couple of walk arounds to get a feel for the place and now am ready to actually start figuring it out. I believe all those switches needto be turned up. I found a letterto Catherine that says something about putting in the number of switches into something that I can't find. Obviously, those two wheels have something to do with getting bridge to the clock tower. Are these answers to be found in the books? Is this the only Age there is?
The letter is there to be a starting point for you. When you begin a game/session you are on the dock - look to your left and you will notice what appears to be shaped like a door. It is a door, and behind it is where you will use the number of marker switches. More information awaits you there...
Made some progress last night. Went through that door (which I didn't notice before) and managed to raise some sort of holographic mountain scape, but no more. Found a LOT of answers in the tower which eventually allowed me to get into the Mechanic Age. Before that, however, I tried the tone puzzle in the spaceship, but was unsuccesful. I think it's a matter of getting the right notes, but I left it for later. Got across the bridge and I think I installed the correct number sequence, but nothing spectacular happened. Leaving that for later too. Got the match in the cabin, but couldn't light the furnace. Again. I'll worry about that later. For now, I'm wandering around in the Mechanical Age.
After being used to the movement and visuals of Exile I was a little uncomfortable in Myst, but have now gotten, well, comfortable.
Question: I noticed there is a book that shows a bunch of different patterns that I think apply to the puzzle in the fireplace. Not sure which page I use. I'm assuming there is a clue somewhere?
There is a clue on which page to use for the fireplace puzzle. It's the last puzzle to solve in the game so you have to play the entire game first. Well, you could do the shortcut version of the game but that's no fun.
About the cabin... a match is great but it's useless if you don't have any fuel.
The music puzzle is really hard and the sliders are really sensitive. There's a clue in the library for the puzzle.

Usually, you hate it when people have gas. This is one of those other times...
-------------------------------- I like Myst 5. I like Uru. I like Realtime 3D *and* Prerendered graphics. I like game history more than I like RAWA history, and while I think Myst 3/4/5 were great games, I think it would have been best to end on Riven and move to Uru. Any questions?
I found the spaceshup piano clue i nthe library and have an idea how the chords should be played, but it looks like I have to have it just right. I get back to it whenever I get out of the Mechanical Age.
I guess I need to look for some fuel when I get back to the main place.
In the Mechanical Age I've opened up the trap door and moved the large gear so the picture on the left is red. This allowws me to get into that elevator and move up to another floor, but now it looks like I need to find something that let's me get to the top of the elevator to manipulate the other handle, which look much like the fortress simulator. Anyone got a bucket I can stand on?
I had one of those "Aha!" moments and soon figured out the Mechanical Age. Now on to whatever Age presents itself.
Some things in the Mechanical Age seemed important, but ultimately had no impact. That mechanical bird, the chess board, the cage, the throne, those three lights, etc. Perhaps these will mean something later on? All I know is that I'm out of that annoying Age (too much clanking and banging sounds) and ready to move on!
There's more to the different Ages in Myst than just the individual objects in them. Together they should give you some insight to the personalities of Atrus and his sons. Believe me, the more you know about them the better!
Oh, but there is one gadget in the Mechanical Age that has some importance in another Age...
I remember, when I was younger...must've been about 7 years ago...I would've been 7.
Anyway, I remember that age. It always scared me. I was always paranoid that someone was going to off me from behind. Then I'd run back to the Library on Myst and shut the front door.
Sometimes I'd shut myself in the fireplace!

"Aha" moments are awesome . They're really what make the Myst series stand out from the pack, and especially Myst and Riven are both chock full of them .

Ah, the infamous red herrings . There's a lot in Myst that you can interact with that has no real impact on your progress, it's just there to provide atmosphere and realism... not everything you see in someone's house is vital to their ability to start their car, but it does make it a nicer place to live .

I'll be honest, I hated Mechanical Age, and still do to this day. It was kind of annoying having to rotate the tower without being able to see where it was stopping, but I think the kicker was Achenar's room and secret chamber... for some reason that room affected me a LOT more than his rooms on the other Ages... maybe it was the monkey head mounted on the wall and the rotting head in a box... and the shock chamber... and the other instruments of torture... *shudder*
Wanna kill Chuck Carter for putting the rotation simulator in Achy's room... *grr*

I have a question that i'm dying to get answered. The letters that you get in each age, you have to take back with you and put them in the right book? how exactly do i do that. i'll have the letter but when i go into the book nothing happens. Or am i supposed to keep the letter? and how come i cant read it? am i supposed to? i would have beaten the game by now but i cant fiqure out these letters.
i have a question..i cant seem to fiqure out the letters you get in each age. i think im supposed to take them back and put them in the right book but i dont know how. when i open the books nothing happens...i still have the letter..am i supposed to keep the letters?
If you are holding either a red page and click on the red book, or holding a blue page and click on the blue book, you should hear a sound and the cursor should change back to its normal shape. Then you will hear the latest "message" from the guy in the book (Sirrus in the red book, Achenar in the blue book). If you try to put a blue page in the red book or vice-versa, nothing will happen.
