I have a new Dell running XP Home SP2. I installed MME (which is DVD) and it installed fine. When I try to run it I get the error that it cannot find Drive D: and that I should insert the drive. Drive D: is my CDROM drive and Drive E: is my DVD drive. Why on earth does it want my CD drive when this is a DVD? If it cannot find the DVD in E: how did it ever install in the first place? I can even insert the DVD, it comes up with the PLAY option, then I click PLAY (instead of starting from the hard drive install), but it still errors out because of the non-related Drive D:.
Please help! Whardy7 |

Don't know about your copy of MME, but mine is on a CD-ROM, not a DVD. Look at the bottom of the disk label; mine carries the number "379718-CD." (I have the Macintosh version.)

Has anybody figured out a fix for this? Thanks in advance. Ryan |

I am having the exact same problem too! I just got a DVD-ROM drive installed into my computer and I had bought the MYST 10th Anniversary DVD edition and the first MYST will not play. It seemed to install just fine, but it keeps requesting a D:\ drive even though it is an E:\ drive. The funny thing is, though, the second cd, the Riven one, can play just fine. Does anyone know what's wrong with MYST?

The MME disc that comes with the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition is in fact a DVD.
Suggestions, to do in the order shown: 1. Set up your DVD drive as the master on its IDE channel. In the master position, the drive is attached to the connector on the end of the ribbon cable, and the jumper on the back of the drive is set to Master or M. Do NOT set the jumper to the Cable Select or CS position. -- If you have only a DVD drive, check to make certain that it's connected and jumpered as master on the IDE channel. -- If you have both a CD and a DVD drive, the CD drive should be set up as slave on the IDE channel, attached to the middle ribbon cable connector and with the jumper set to the Slave or S position. Do NOT set the jumper to the Cable Select or CS position. 2. Have Windows re-detect your DVD (and CD) drive, even if you made no changes to cable connections and/or jumper positions as above: -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Close any open applications, and disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware programs running in the background. -- b. Click on Start > Run, type services.msc, then click on OK. -- c. Double-click on Plug and Play. (If you get a Configuration Manager message, click on OK.) -- d. In the Startup Type list, click on Automatic, then click on OK. -- e. Close Services, and reboot into normal Windows. Log in with full Administrator privileges. -- f. If you get no error messages during bootup, reboot into Safe Mode. -- g. Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop. -- h. Click on Properties, click on the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager. -- i. Click on your DVD drive, and press Delete. Repeat for your CD drive, if you have one. -- j. Close Device Manager, go back to the Desktop, and reboot into normal Windows. Your DVD (and CD) drive should be re-detected as part of the bootup process. 3. Install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c. First log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and clear your Internet Explorer caches. -- a. Close all open applications. -- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session. -- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options. -- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK. -- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK. -- f. Click on Clear History > Yes. -- g. Click on OK to exit. Use Windows (not Internet) Explorer to search all hard disks for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If you can delete a file in a temp folder, it's not in use - if it's in use, Windows won't let you delete it. -- a. Close all open applications, and open a Windows Explorer session. (Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.) -- b. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders. -- c. Type temp in the Named: box. -- d. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched. -- e. Click on Find Now to start the search. -- f. Click on the temp folders found to open them. -- g. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. -- h. Repeat for tmp and temporary folders. -- i. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop. Empty the Recycle Bin. If you're positive that no files have been deleted by mistake, do only steps g. through i. -- a. From the Desktop, right-click on the Recycle Bin. -- b. Click on Open to view the Bin's contents. -- c. Click on any file that was deleted by mistake. -- d. Click on File > Restore. -- e. Repeat as necessary. -- f. Click on File > Close. -- g. Right-click on the Recycle Bin. -- h. Click on Empty Recycle Bin. -- i. Click on Yes to confirm file deletion. Then install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c. Re-download the DirectX installer file - don't use one that you already have. (Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive.) -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. -- b. Download the DirectX 9.0c installer (dxwebsetup.exe), available here, to a folder and not to the Desktop. "Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading or installing DirectX. -- c. Close any open applications, and disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware programs running in the background. -- d. Click on Start > Run. -- e. Browse to dxwebsetup.exe, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box. -- f. Click on OK to start the DirectX installation process. Accept the install defaults. -- g. Reboot when installation is complete. -- h. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Close any open applications and disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware programs running in the background. -- i. Insert the MME DVD into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed. If it auto-starts, cancel back to the Desktop. -- j. Start MME by clicking on the Desktop shortcut icon. 4. Re-install MME from a clean boot. Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive. First uninstall MME: -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. -- b. Uninstall MME using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs. ----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs. ----- 2. In the Currently installed programs box, click the Myst Masterpiece Edition entry to highlight it. ----- 3. Click on Change (or Change/Remove). ----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes. ----- 5. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop. -- c. Use Windows Explorer to delete any remaining Program Files MME files and folders (\Myst Masterpiece Edition in C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition, if you accepted the install default). -- d. Reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Then re-install MME: -- a. Click on Start > Run. -- b. Type msconfig in the Open: box, then click on OK. -- c. Click on Selective Startup on the General tab. -- d. Under Selective Startup, clear the check boxes for: ----- Process SYSTEM.INI File ----- Process WIN.INI File ----- Load Startup Items -- e. On the Services tab, click the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, then click Disable All. -- f. Click on OK, and then click on Restart. -- g. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. -- h. Insert the MME DVD into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed. If it auto-starts, cancel back to the Desktop. -- i. Click on Start > Run. -- j. Browse to Setup.exe on the MME DVD, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box. -- k. Click on OK to start the installation process. ----- 1. Install to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition. ----- 2. On the appropriate page, uncheck all boxes except for Create Desktop Shortcut. -- l. When the installation is complete, remove the MME DVD from the drive. -- m. Restore the settings you changed with steps c. through e. ----- 1. Click Start > Run. ----- 2. Type msconfig in the Open box, then click on OK. ----- 3. Click on Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services on the General tab. ----- 4. Click on OK, and then click on Restart to reboot into normal Windows. -- n. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. Close any open applications, and disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware programs running in the background. -- o. Insert the MME DVD into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed. If it auto-starts, cancel back to the Desktop. -- p. Start MME by clicking on the Desktop icon. 5. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and try running MME using Compatibility Mode. (Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive.) See How to use the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows XP and How to Use Windows Application Compatibility Mode for details. Select Win 98/Me mode, then in sequence: -- a. 'Run in 256 colors', and start MME. -- b. 'Run in 256 colors', 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution', and start MME. -- c. 'Run in 256 colors', 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution', and 'Disable visual themes' and start MME. Heimdall This message has been edited. Last edited by: Heimdall G, |
