So, I'll try to be specific.

MYST:
I have got a MYST CD for Windows 95, which is apparently v1.3 and was released in 1996.

My System:
Celeron 850 MHz
256 MB of RAM
NVidia Riva TNT2 graphical adapter
AC'97 sound card
Operating System:
Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4.
I have DirectX 8.

Details:
The game installs good.
It runs only in compatibility mode
with some tweaking - I register a COM object in apppatch\slayerui.dll file with regsvr32.exe utulity, which turns on compatibility mode in Win2000, and run it perfectly, although in 640x480 8bpp mode. I lock my refresh rate with dxdiag utility to 85Hz.

Problem:
So everything is okay, until I try to exit the elevator in mechanical age at top floor. There appears a sudden CRASH, with Windows complaining about illegal operation performed.
This happens always. I have no other problems in MYST.

Questions to be answered:
Is there a solution to this, except the usual "dirty CD" explanation?(I suppose mine is as clean as angel's teardrop) Is there a patch? Am I the only one, who experience this bug?
Where would you get that particular dissolving agent all are talking about? Will simple ethanol work for this matter (it's more common, you know)?

Thanks in advance, and as always MYST rules!

The usual cleaning agent is isopropyl alcohol, or "rubbing" alcohol. It is an over-the-counter item usually sold in drugstores at either 70% or 91% concentration. Ethanol is taxable as a consumable spirit, and is more expensive.

That said, it doesn't seem that your problem would be CD-related. An "illegal" Windows operation would point more toward a possible error in the main program. Try reinstalling the game.

All of the early Myst games (Myst, Riven, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelation) are pre-rendered at 640 x 480 resolution. The original Myst requires you to set to that resolution, and also to set 256 color depth (IIRC).

Also, turn off any screen savers and antivirus you have running, and any other programs you have running. Just remember to turn your antivirus back on before going online again.

Actually tried reinstalling, same thing...
Resolution? The game runs well, it is jsut one single place in mechanical Age.
I found a dependancy rule here: if you go to elevator BEFORE you touch the red button, then click on the glass tube with reflection of the walkway behind you (realizing the elevator is not turned properly) THEN proceed as usual with lowering walkway, rotating the elevator and such, finally jumping out of elevator at 3rd level
THEN everything is fine. (I finshed MYST, BTW)

OTHERWISE, if I do not go in, but instead push the button and proceed as usual, there is a crash.
Seems to be very very intimate problem that lies in code. Don't want to look at it. Are there some fans of disassemby? Smile (joking)

In fact I used to run games on platforms on which people commonly said it was impossible. (As they say, You CAN do it, if you REALLY WANT it). Smile

I've got a bad disk, BTW. SOME *.mov files are corrupted (shown as of date created 1965, with chunks of directory structure tree written inside intermixed with data. Neither game, QT player or Media Player can open them.)
