You may be having a Quicktime conflict going on. What version of Myst are you playing?

This topis is a bit old but I just got the 10th Anniversary Set recently and ran into this exact problem. I solved it today but totally uninstalling Quicktime from my computer and deleting the folder it left behind then installing the Quicktime 6.3 version that comes on the DvD's. This and setting the compatability to 640x480 cleared up all the issues I had with hearing the voices in the books and the viewer.

I hope this helps anyone else having the same issue.

Have you tried Paedoewyn's fix, immediately above?

See also Apple's realMyst Games page, for the MacPlay Version 12 02 patch.

Mac/OS X users can also try installing an earlier version of QuickTime.

First, if you don't already have it, try installing version 7.1.3, the latest QuickTime for Mac. Uninstall your current QuickTime version, reboot, and install 7.1.3. Then reboot, and start realMyst. (To determine which QuickTime version you currently have installed, open QuickTime and click on Help > About QuickTime Player.)

I don't have a realMyst disc at hand to check, but it may have a folder containing QuickTime for Mac installation files on it. If so and if version 7.1.3 didn't help, uninstall 7.1.3, reboot, and install the version from the disc.

If the realMyst disc doesn't have QuickTime for Mac installation files on it, Apple has previous versions available. For example:
-- QuickTime Update 6.3.1
-- QuickTime 6.3 for Mac OS X (Jaguar): Information and Download
-- QuickTime 6.3 Reinstaller for Mac OS X:Information and Download

Uninstall 7.1.3, reboot, and install the previous version. Then reboot, and start realMyst.
