For the life of me I cannot get the correct tune. I've tried sliding up the knobs and counting the sound increases, but it's hit or miss. Sometimes I can't tell how many sound levels I've moved up. Trying different levels doesn't work either. I suspect I doomed to keep trying to nudge the knobs into the corrct levels, but how long is this going to take. I know where they are supposed to be, but getting them there is proving annoying.

spindoctor6,
No musical memory, eh? It sounds as if you know that the number of piano keys up from the lowest on the keyboard equals the number of notes up from the lowest on a slider. Being a pianist helps, I guess. My problem was that setting the slider by clicking an dragging was one thing; getting the note to stay in place when letting up on the mouse button was another. ------------------------------------------- Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to SUFFERING! - Yoda |

I tried it again last night, and was unsuccesful. I got them in their approximate positions, then shifted them up and down. This is NOT fun.

spindoctor6,
What are the counts of tones (up from lowest) that you are working toward? ------------------------------------------- Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to SUFFERING! - Yoda |

Spoiler below!! Like it will help.
From left to right: 8, 20, 23, 13, 6 I'm sure I have the numbers correct, it's just a matter of CAREFULLY moving the knobs up and hopefully counting the correct number of tone increases. Easier said than done! |

spindoctor6,
If you are sure you have the numbers right, OK then. Here is an excerpt from a Myst journal made by someone who has been there, done that: ------------------ I ran back to the library and returned to the inside of the ship with the book. I figured that I must play the keys in the appropriate sequence. That must be the solution to the puzzle I had to solve. With the journal in my left hand I played the sequence of notes on the keyboard. Nothing. Mildly annoyed, I went across to the front of the ship and examined the panel on the front. There were five small sliding levers grouped together, and a large handle sitting off to the right. By moving the levers up and down, I created noises which came out of a small speaker on the bottom of the panel. I recognised that the noise was the sound of the pipe organ at the other end of the ship. When I pulled the large handle, five notes played over the speaker in sequence. Each note played was the note that each slider was set to. Maybe my job was to play the notes on this device. I ran back to the organ keyboard and played the first note, which was a low C. I held the key down for a few seconds until I was sure that I had memorized that particular note. I then ran back to the controls at the front of the ship and fiddled with the first slider until it emitted a low C note as well. After about seven more times of running back and forth to both ends of the ship I was pretty sure that I had the right sequence. By guesswork, I assumed the next step to do would be to pull the handle. I pulled the handle and each note played again through the small speaker. Suddenly, a bright light came from inside the bubble itself. A holographic image of a book floated at the very center of the bubble. The book opened itself up and I saw a barren landscape with few trees or landmarks. I reached my hand out to touch the edge of the bubble..... I opened my eyes and realized that I was still in the spaceship. A cool breeze was coming through the open hatchway. I looked out and realized that I had transferred over to another age. ----------------------- ------------------------------------------- Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to SUFFERING! - Yoda |

I tried that way too, but no luck. I know what I need to do, but I guess I just have to keep trying. This reminds me of the last puzzle in Exile; you know what needs to be done, but the process is tedious.
It sounds like I COULD finish Myst without goingto this last Age, but I don't want to miss out on the experience. Thanks for your suggestions. |

Heres a thought: If you have any friends who play guitar/mandolin/whatever ask them if they have an electric tuner. If so, borrow it (or just buy one if you're really desparate; they're about ten bucks) and hold it next to your speaker while you play the notes on the organ. For each of the five keys the tuner will display one (musical) note; A flat, A, A sharp, B, etc. Write these notes down! Then next time you adjust the knobs, hold the tuner to the speakers again and make sure the tuner is displaying the same note it did when you hit the organ key. I apologize if you don't understand these directons (it should become clear once you've seen an electric tuner and know how they work). I struggled with the spaceship puzzle too, but after doing this I succeeded. Good luck!
