First of all, this is my very first post on this forum, so let me know if I'm breaking any rules or anything...
I have been running around hopelessly in the Stoneship age for the past few days, and have suddenly realized that my problem might be something do to with a glitch in the game. I know that I have to do something with the compass-thing in the secret passageway between the two sons' bedrooms, but, every time I try and click on it, the power goes out and I have to go crank the generator again. Every. Single. Time. And that's the only time it ever happens. I know it's not a coincidence, either, because I could go crank the generator, run as fast as I could to the compass, click on it, and the lights will still go out. After an entire thirty seconds. Is this a glitch in my game? Am I even supposed to be clicking on the compass? Any help given would be much appreciated. |

Are you clicking to the compass, or are you clicking buttons on the compass? Because if you press a wrong button, you will trip the lights and have to go recharge the batteries again.

Yep, you have to click the compass first for a kind of zoom in, then you need to click the right "spot" (compass degree), to turn on the submersible's lights.

I'm running Myst Masterpiece Edition, 10th Anniversary Edition, and even with all the glitches I came across this was not one of them. Be sure you don't click a wrong button... I would even try clicking on the place where the right button is in order to click to the compass, if that's possible. Just to be safe.

Hi... new poster also... I also thought I had a glitch for the same reason as you. But I also have another problem you didn't mention... If I don't get out of the stairwell quickly enough after pushing that button, I get a message saying "MYST caused a general protection fault in Module_Audio.DLL at 0002:0A3D. Choose close. Myst will close." Then the game shuts down. What is that? I'm running an old version (Win 3.1 or higher) on my XP. I got it to work by choosing "Run with Win 95" in the compatability section of properties. Everything else works great until I reach that point. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums!
Questions: 1. Have you installed the latest video and sound drivers from your PC's manufacturer? 2. You're "...running an old version (Win 3.1 or higher) on my XP." What does that mean? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Hi and thank you... I'm sorry, I meant the game version requirements listed on the box say I need Windows 3.1 or higher (it's an older game). I've installed it on my computer which runs Windows XP. It runs perfectly until I get to the "compass-thing" in the Stoneship age (as referred to above), but if the warning buzzer sounds too long, I get that error message (see above) as soon as I re-enter the stairwell and I'm forced to close the game. As far as I know, my drivers are up-to-date, as my computer is not that old, however, not being too computer-savvy, I wouldn't even know what I would need at this point. Is that error message a common one, and if so, is there an easy fix? Thanks again. Gisele

PC manufacturers often don't install the latest drivers when they ship a PC. So if you haven't updated your drivers, it's very likely that they're out of date.
Please post a DxDiag report so that we can take a look at your system. The report will be long, but post *all* of it! To post a DxDiag report: 1. Click on Start > Run. 2. Type dxdiag in the box. 3. Click OK. 4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear. 5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step! -- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions. -- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions. -- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions. 6. Click on the Save All Information button. 7. Close the DxDiag utility. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it. 8. Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard. -- a. Double-click on the file to open it. -- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu. -- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu. 9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic. -- a. Click on the yellow Reply arrow in the lower right corner of the screen. -- b. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box, type in any additional details that might help diagnose the problem. -- c. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and two lines down from the additional details, then right-click. -- d. Click on Paste in the resulting menu. -- e. Click on Post Now. If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Yep, both your video and sound drivers are way out of date.
Suggestions: 1. Install the latest sound driver from MSI for your C-Media AC97 Audio chipset. This is CMI9761_71.zip, available here. -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Double-click on the above CMI9761_71.zip link, and download the file. ----- 1. Double-click on a server (preferably 3, 4, or 5). ----- 2. Click on Save on the File Download popup. ----- 3. Select a folder to which to download the file, and click on Save. -- c. This is an archive (ZIP format) file, which may or may not automatically unzip when downloading is complete. If it unzips automatically, be certain to unzip to the folder to which you downloaded the file. ----- 1. If the file does NOT unzip automatically, open Windows (not Internet) Explorer and browse to the download folder. ----- 2. Double-click on CMI9761_71.zip, which will cause the file to unzip. Be certain to unzip to the folder to which you downloaded the file. -- d. You should now have a CMI9761_81 subfolder which contains several sub-subfolders and Setup.exe. To install the driver: ----- 1. Close Windows Explorer. ----- 2. Click on Start > Run. ----- 3. Browse to the CMI9761_81 subfolder, and double click on Setup.exe to put it in the Open: box. ----- 4. Click on OK to begin the installation process. Accept the install defaults whenever possible. ----- 5. When installation is complete, close everything back to the Desktop, and reboot. -- e. Play Myst. 2. If the above doesn't help (or even if it does!), install the latest video driver from NVIDIA for your GeForce4 MX 4000 chipset. This is ForceWare version 93.71, 93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe, available here. -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Double-click on the above ForceWare link, click on the NVIDIA license agreement box to put a check in it, and click on Download Now > Continue (bottom of page) to download the file. ----- 1. Click on Save on the File Download popup. ----- 2. Select a folder to which to download the file, and click on Save. -- c. 93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe is an archive (.exe format) file. ----- 1. To unarchive the file, open Windows (not Internet) Explorer and browse to the download folder. ----- 2. Double-click on 93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe, which will start the unarchiving process. ----- 3. Accept the license agreement, and click on Next. ----- 4. If C:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\93.71 is the Save files in: folder, click on Next. -- d. 93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe will extract to C:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\93.71, and the driver installation process will start automatically. ----- 1. Cancel the installation process back to the Desktop. Do NOT allow installation to proceed at this point! ----- 2. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop. -- e. Uninstall the existing NVIDIA driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs. ----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs. The installed programs will take a few seconds to populate - wait for it. ----- 2. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the NVIDIA drivers entry. ----- 3. Click on Change (or Change/Remove). ----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click on Yes. ----- 5. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop. ----- 6. Reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges. -- f. During bootup, Windows will want to install a video driver. Cancel the install process! Windows will install its default driver. -- g. Close all open applications, and disable your anti-virus/adware/spyware/pop-up software. -- h. Click on Start > Run. -- i. Browse to C:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\93.71, and double-click on setup.exe to put it in the Open: box. -- j. Click on OK to start the installation process. -- k. Follow the installation Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults. -- l. Reboot when prompted. -- m. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- n. Play Myst. BTW, if you don't have the URL, the MSI downloads for your MS-6743 (865PEM2-ILS motherboard) are available here. (Click on the appropriate tab - BIOS, Driver, Utility, etc.) Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |
