Hey guys, I've been looking at myst on and off for years... and finaly decided to buy it after seeing the "Myst Collection" for cheap, got home, installed MME and it all installed fine, put quicktime (the verson that came with it) and let it find out that directx was already installed and it all seemed well. When i go to play the game from either start menu or autoplay it crash's instantly saying "this program has encountered an error and had to close". I have tried all manner of compatibility settings and the like but to no avail, can anyone help me? ^_^

System:
OS: Windows XP Professional
Ram: 2gb
Processos: 4400+ AMD64x2
Harddrive: 20gb IDE Seagate Drive (thats what its installed on)
Graphics: nVidia 8600 256mb XXX Edition (with latest drivers sept/07)

Oh.. and i've tried the exact same disk on my gf's laptop and it loads and runs fine... but not on my desktop ^_^ Any ideas? =) Thnks

When Heimdall gets here, you will have some real help... meantime, if you have multiple CPUs in your computer, you might have trouble with the early Myst games (up through Myst III: Exile). Do you have any way of turning off one CPU?

Well, yes, you can in fact "turn off" one processor core when you run MME! That may not be your problem, but it's as good a place as any from which to start. (Myst is an *old* game, which is probably why it may not like dual cores.)

Try the following:
-- a. Read page 1 and page 2 of Monitoring and Optimizing Apps on Dual-Core and Multiprocessor Systems, then try the 3 methods described on page 2.
-- b. Both methods for setting affinity masks as described in ImageCFG.
-- c. RunFirst

Thank you for your advice and suggestions so far I have prograssed and now.. having had a fiddle with the game now a little i worked out my codec pack was interfering with Quicktime player and blocking it from running, this now sorted and quicktime being restored to default player for all quicktime files. The game loads *cheer*
But all i get is a black screen, below are links to screen shots of what i get ^_^
Again i have tried in all manner of compatibility modes and have not got a rise out of it.
The core supression programs seemed to have no real effect as to weather they were run or not (it was the quicktime issue that was causing the first bug, this is not another =D go me)

This image is what i get if i move my mouse to the top of the screen

The image below is if i keep the mouse in the middle of the screen, I can hear an owl hooting and possibly the sound of running water... if this the start of the game in blackness? or.. is it still broken =D

The sounds you hear are normal for the start of a new Myst game, but the black screen is definitely not. Something is still broken!

You may have a hardware and/or driver problem. If you'll post a DxDiag report in this topic, we can take a look at your system and maybe spot something. The report will be long, but post *all* of it!

To post a DxDiag report:
1. Click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box.
3. Click OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step!
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility.
8. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it.
Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard.
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic.
-- a. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box, type in any details that might help diagnose the problem.
-- b. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and one line down from the details, then right-click.
-- c. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
-- d. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard.

I'm testing a theory that might work out our problem...i too am suffering from the MME crash...my error screen shows that it's a quicktime error on my main machine with windows XP.

however, When i ran the same game on Microsoft Virtual PC running OS windows 98SE i had absolutely NO, repeat NO errors...

Current Config (Physical Machine)
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66gHz
sATA 500GB
Asus Commando
SoundBlaster X-FI Fatality
nVidia GeForce 8600GTS 512PCI
1GB Corsair PC-6400 RAM
OS: Windows XP Pro SP 2

I'm not running a virtual machine at the moment...i need to install the rest of my stuff first. But the stuff does work...and may help me with my "legacy" apps. You know..warcraft 1 etc.
