When you hit Ctrl+U, it should switch to your Underground Map. It will be completely black, however; if you use the LOWER tool (on the Tiles Tab) and set the Draw Tool to X3, it will cause a deep indentation that ends up being about a tile wide at the bottom. It is hard to see at first, but if you move your brush around while you have your left mouse button pushed, it will actually continue digging. At the top of the Editor, click VIEW and then click Map Properties. You should then get a display for Map Properties. On the very front page, there are options that let you change the type of light settings for top and underground map. For underground, I have changed my light settings to Haven Light so I can see what I am doing. Later, you can change it back.
If you are trying to place a subterrainian gate without an exit, I'm not sure what kind of message you will get, but if you do have an exit, you may need to call up your passability check to see if you have it against a wall or another object.
Anyone else have any ideas?

You may have figured this out already, I realize your post is more than a month old. From the way you are describing the problem, it sounds as if you are placing the entrances and exits okay; they simply are not working in the game. If that is the case, then go back to the editor and be sure that you have linked each entrance with an exit. To do this, select each entrance and exit in turn, pull up the properties screen and simply number them: Entrance 1 will connect to Exit 1, Entrance 2 will connect to Exit 2, etc. The relative positions of the entrances and exits (even if they are right on top of one another) no longer have anything to do with linking them (unlike in all the previous versions of Heroes).
Hope that helps!

@ jagoBC -- great tip!
@ digitlefreak044 -- I followed the tutorial and was able to create an underground with entrance and exit that worked properly.
