Try not criticising programming skills unless you yourself have a software fix for it ... such criticism doesn't go down well with anyone. That said, I'm sure it would help if you describe the situation a little more.
Were the units in the air? Were they in the air, but just outside the field of play (I have seen this bug before). I believe it is a bug they hope to fix with the patch promised for some time in Feb...
Were there other circumstances?

I wonder if Ubisoft Shanghai are going to foot the bill for all the 360's that fail due to the constant console lock ups this game causes at the weekends. Mine's already done it 5 times this evening, and I haven't even played a game....... I think UbiShang should get a US or Euro office to help on the fixes so that they can get them out ASAP.

I doubt that bugs that cause freezing will harm the hardware of the 360. I would however, from my own experience, suggest that SOME game freezing can be indicative of hardware problems, and may not be due to game bugs. It is, however, hard to differentiate the two. Others have posted some good suggestions for mitigating the game freezing bug caused by the "host quit session" cascading bug. Always try to enter a game with a full party; if you see "host quit session" always quit and reform your party before entering another game; check your NAT settings, and ensure they are open (if you haven't already done so); check that no one else is congesting your internet connection; if you regularly have problems with yourself, or a specific friend hosting, try another friend hosting the game. Not saying these will fix all problems, or avoid the need for a patch, but they do help some people avoid freezing.

If the game bugs and freezes the entire console and you have to force shut it down then that can do damage...only had that happen twice with this game, no more then other games, usually when this game freezes(which does happen a lot more often then other games) my ps3 can reboot itself.

When the 360 beeps as it crashes, and then the screen stays on the game image, powering that off using either the power button or power button on the DVD remote, causes irreversable damage to the components within the 360. Not good.
