Im a person who loves practing martial arts and I was dissapointed in the sword fighting in red steel. Im a game designer/player before martial artist. I thought that red steel was supposed to show some sort of recconition to your sword swings, but it shows none at all! It randomly swings and the only time it sort of does what you want is on their "special moves". I hate the sword fights because of this and they only annoy me. Plus, where is the blood?! Red steel is redless! There is no blood! This is 2007 or 6 how ever you look at it... To me if you want sword fighting stick to Zelda. The best out there at this point. The sword fights should have been left out of the final game since it lacks fine tunning. I would have like it to at least reconise horrizontal and vertical slashes! Nope. Not in Red-less Steel.

While I'll agree with you about the blood....(or lack there of.... argh!!!) I do think they're headed down the right path with Red Steel.
The sword play is, at least, trying to be realistic as compared to Zelda, which is the BADDEST game ever!!! Off the subject a bit, but it was my first Zelda game and I was completely blown away at the scope of that game. If games were compared by planets, Zelda is a Universe! Wow! But back to the sword play thing...at least in Red Steel, when you swung up, down, left or right...that's the way the sword attacked (most the time) In Zelda, it's more "video game" like. I mean, press A with another button and you get a particular swing. Now, I'm not saying Red Steel hit the Bulls Eye, but I think it's a good start. I agree, there is definitely a loss in translations with your swing and the swing that the game gives you, but lets be aware that this is the first system that offers you game play like this. Hopefully the next will be improved. I still liked the game, but the lack of blood was VERY disappointing!!! |

I kind of agree with both of you, I was expecting a lot more regarding the sword fighting, for example to follow my movements more accurately, then I came to think that this is the very first time I play a game like this with a controller like this (the Wiimote of course), so I started to actually enjoy the fights by letting me go with the flow of the game and also to feel if like I'm the one fighting on the screen even though sometimes the swings don't match entirely my gestures. I'm having more fun now with the game, just remember that having fun is an state of mind!!! Try it, you might be able to have the greatest fun ever.

IMO the swordplay, while a grea idea is pathetic......no feel at all and the movements Im making are nothing at all what i happening in the game.
Ive ended up just jumping out of the way and prodding the wii at the tv.Not fun but effective so far. |

As a swordsman i can't help but feel the game could not be further away from any form of realism.
Of course i don't expect this game to remain faithful to any school of kenjutsu but it could of at least tried to appear to be thought out. I mean there are no shifts of battle based on which stance you are in or how the sword is held. There is no sense of timing, posture or technique present. You are better off working in a mad swinging frenzy and taking the hits that come your way. It probably would of been best if this game had simply stripped the duelling out, rather then shooting itself in the foot and attempting it. |

I personally HATE the sword-fighting in this game. Okay, it's nice a few times but when there are several sword fights after another, I wish I could just use my .45 friend to bring this to a fast end (which would be more realistic, IMHO).
