Yes, I believe you can. BUT: Katana vs. 6 gunmen wielding an assortment of pistols, assault rifles, and grenades = Big no no!

No.
When you reach a swordplay section, the game automatically makes you put away your gun and pull out your katana.
However, the melee attacks are actually done with the tanto, so if you want to be really picky, you could argue that you "kinda'" do.

As Darth_SS said, no, you can't, but if you enjoy sword fights so much you can always replay a level wich involves sword figting  ...leaving the jokes outside, Red Steel is mainly a FPS game, not a sword fighting simulator, though i`m pretty sure that it won't take long until something like that will appear seeing how succesfull the Wii controlers are  What doesn't kill you makes you wanna kill yourself!

so basically, you cannot use the in-depth katana special attacks and parries all the time. But you are allowed to use a melee attack(swings katana) to kill people in the normal game. However please remember that they are indeed, wielding guns.
