Hello folks.
I have a problem with SHIV. After the intro movie has ended, and the game menu should appear, is there only a black screen. Although the music is running, nothing happen. Right after the intro movie ends, does my desktop appear in half a second or so.
The weird thing is, that the game worked on my old computer, where the OS was XP. My new uses Vista and I have had some problems with other games, but I don't know what is wrong. I am only searching for a solution to SHIV now ^^
I have read another topic, but there was no answer to that, so I hope some of you guys will help me with this problem.

Welcome to the SHIV Forums, Corsair. My first suggestion would be to delete the intro movies. You can find them at SHIV/Data/Movies/Intro. If that does not help post back and we'll try something else. Thumbs Up

If you have an Nvidia 8800 card ... set the antialiasing to anything but 4X and it should work.

Else ... go with Tambor's recommendation,

Hello again guys.
The game works now, but I don't know how. I deleted the movies, as you said, but it still didn't work. Then I looked in my Nvidia controlpanel as Frank said. But I couldn't find the antialiasing. My graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GS. I found another place, where I changed some options. It was a slider, where I could choose between either performance or quality. I placed the slider in the middle. That helped, the game works now. But I have had some problems where it has malfunctioned. Maybe thats just because of some bugs, I haven't installed any updates yet.

Didn't think that bug happened on 8600 cards ... I learn something new every day.

To adjust the antialiasing as a separate item in the control panel use the 'Manage 3D settings' item rather than the "adjust image settings with preview' item.

Yeah ... the Balanced setting uses 2X antialiasing, whilst Quality uses 4X which is a no-no. Interestingly you can set it to higher than 4X settings with no problems in SH4.

Thanks. Now I know what that is ^^.
My antialiasing was at the top, which has to be 4X. So it can't be higher. It runs on 2X now. Would it help, if I changed the colors to either 32 bit or 16 bit? Or change the resolution?

Not really,

32 bit is the default resolution for most games nowadays (actually it's 24 bit colour and 8 bits for transparency and other effects but they call it 32 bit colour), and the more resolution you stack on the card the more pixels it has to shift, and the slower the frame rate gets.

That said, you should be able to get a fairly high resolution out of an 8600 GTS without affecting DirectX 9 performance. (DirectX 10 performance on the other hand can really suck at higher resolutions ... for my money it's about 50% slower than DX9 at shifting pixels.) I go for whatever is the maximum on my monitor, and only work down if the frame rates start to suck.

Anti-aliasing simply overlays 3D shapes with other copies (to smooth the edges out) which can affect performance, and anistropic filtering increases the detail of texture maps in 3D games ... which can also affect performance.

Regards,

okay Smile
Thank you very much for the replies, that helped a lot.
A last thing I would like to know is, how I can get more ammo on my sub. I have tried to "refit" at Pearl and Midway, but nothing happens.
