Patch 1.4 can be used on both the RETAIL (DVD) version & the DOWNLOADABLE (D2D) version of the game.
Patch 1.4 can be installed directly over the stock game - you do not need any previous patches to install. Of course you can also install 1.4 over any previous version, but a clean install is considered to be safer.
You should un-install any mods before you install the patch. Check that the game runs OK before re-installing any mods.
Some mods may no longer work with 1.4. Check the mod websites to see if a newer version exists.
Previous saved games will typically not work after patching SH4 to 1.4. However, autosaves in base *might* work.
