the M1 Carbine is using shorterned 30 cal cartridges, so it packs less punch

dont forget the M1 Garand actually is a
battle rifle, meaning the round pack a lot of
knock-out power

the M1 Carbine is designed to be light-weight
and more portable....

its more like an assault rifle than a battle rifle...

I own an M1 Carbine, from Auto-Ordnance. Fun as hell to shoot and its just under 3ft in total length and weighs in at only 5 lbs. The carbine's .30 cal round travels at slower rates than some other military rounds of the time. The .30 cal carbine round has a lower velocity and killing power too. It simply doesnt penetrate skin as violently as other rounds. The gun itself was developed as just a lightweight, more weildy version of the M1 Garand.

You mean the M1 Carbine has half the power of the M1 Garand. The Carbine's muzzle velocity runs around 1900fps while the Garand's hits 2800fps with ease. The M1 Garand was a heavy SOB with an effective range near 500 yards, while the Carbine was a little SOB hitting somewhere around 300 yards. The M1 Carbine, although highly more accurate than .45 cal weapons like the Thompson, was still incapable of penetrating light cover.

I think he means it holds close to half the number of rounds, 8 compared to 15

The M1 Carbine's lack of power is mostly unfounded rumor. It could be considered the 'best pistol ever' for its basic use, as it's more powerful than a .357 magnum, and nobody disrespects that. Still it's a carbine and not a rifle, so its ability to penetrate cover and be effective at over 200 yards is lacking. It's really quite a bit more capable than many people give it credit for.

It's still an excellent weapon and was pretty ideal for paratroopers at the time.
