I dont know them all but i'll answer what i can:
1) Don't know 2) I think so yes. There an assualt regiment rather then an airborne unit. 3) Don't know 4) No. It was disbanded not long after the war. 5) Don't know 6) Nope.
No, they jump with umbrellas and see how fast they fall and the first one to land with out breaking his legs gets a prize. COURSE they use parachutes. --------------------------------------------- 8:50 AM 7th July 2005 London - Never Forget. |

*Disclaimer* Some of my posted information here may be wrong or outdated so if anyone here that have actual correct facts then feel free to post corrections and such to my post. BTW, Google.com is a beautiful and powerful thing in regards to this. 1. For the US Army, to the best of my knowledge they still only have two Airborne Divisions that can be called "Airborne" active to this day. The 82nd "All American" and the 101st "Screaming Eagles". There is also countless other smaller airborne type units as well such as the 173rd "Sky Soldiers" Airborne Brigade (AKA 87th Reconnaissance Troop in WW2) and "Airborne Rangers" and "Special Forces" that is still active to present day. 2. Well technically, they are "Air-Assault" now meaning they do repealing off of helicopters and stuff, but that doesn't mean they can't jump out of airplanes too. A US Army Division is a big Military UNIT employing hundreds of troops. Almost all the troopers in the 101st are "Airborne" certified, and I think you need to be to be accepted or assigned to the division / unit. That means earning "jump wings" on the uniform which means passing "jump school" / Parachute School, "meaning you qualified to jump out of a perfectly good airplane." 3. Not really sure about that, but in WW2 they did give extra pay to persons that was in actual combat regardless of "airborne" or not. Don't know about now though. 4. As for Easy Co. 2/506 101st Airborne Div., no, that is not a active US Army Unit as that unit got disbanded right after WW2. Although, there was a 506 PIR LRRP unit in the Vietnam War. There is still a Active 502nd PIR in the 101st Airborne Div at present day. They were or is still in Iraq right now. This would be the direct descendants of the unit portrayed in "Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30". 5. It was a temporary "makeshift" training camp in WW2. It was part of the many dozens that sprang up across the USA in WW2, but now it no longer exist as a military base or training camp. I have heard that the original site of "Camp Toccoa" is near a present day active US Army Base in the State of Georgia, but don't know which one though. 6. Yes. I have the privilege and honor of knowing friends and acquaintances that are former US Army "airborne paratroopers" and LRRP Veterans. 7. Yes, to be a "airborne paratrooper" you have to pass the US Army Airborne Parachutists' Course "Jump School" which means jumping out of a fixed wing aircraft with a parachute on and it's still 5 official jumps to earn your wings. Currently the US Army runs the only Military "Parachute Jump School" in all of the branches of the US Military. Yes, if you are in the USMC and want those jump wings you have to take a Army Course and pass. Hope that answers most of your questions. |

Im thinking of becoming a Paratrooper, is it still voluntary? Can I just sign up to be a paratrooper or does the army pick the unit
|

If I remember correctly from folks that was and is in the US Military, it is still voluntary to take the course / school. Once you have enlisted and have passed through Basic Training you get to choose what you want to do next. There is also the basic "Arms Services Test" they give you when you enlist to see what you qualify to do and stuff in the military, such as field engineers and such, but I think that anyone that qualifies for basic infantry can take Parachute Training to get their "Jump Wings". Getting assigned to a "Airborne" unit is a different matter all together. It's like "Ranger Qualified" and actual "Assigned As a Ranger", as in one that have earned the "Ranger Tab" (one who passed the Ranger Course) and one that actually is and was assigned / in a Ranger Unit. In a way, it is like applying for a job in the civilian world. Best advice is if you want to enlist is that talk to your recruiter and make sure you know what you want to do (as in have a plan) and get it done. Make sure to do as much research as you can before hand. After all you are volunteering to give up 2 to 4 years of your life to the government, so be sure you have a clear idea what you want to do during that time, because if you don't, you might just end up regretting a few things. What ever you decide to do, "Good Luck Trooper". |

the 101st airborne does not exist, it is now the 101st Air Cavalry. i'm pretty sure it's been called that since the 1960's.

They're still the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), though "Air Assault" has been tagged on. http://www.campbell.army.mil/newinternet/main.asp |

Actually the 506th is still in service in Iraq right now, however only the 1st Battalion is activated. |
