I think it would be nice to see some war films/progammes about the brits as well. WE NEED A NEW UPDATED, EXELENT (NONE OF THIS PREPPY RE-MAKE ****)FILM ABOUT THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN? You with me Brits?
We certainly need one about the Desert Rats. Those boys had guts! Or the commandos in St.Nazier or however its spelt. Wot about a film about the raid on a german port will little more than 22 Swordfish planes? After all, thats where Admiral Yamamoto (it that his name?) got the idea for the bombing of Pearl Harbour!!! COME ON ALL U BRIT WAR BUFFS!!! U KNOW THERE ARE TO FEW MOVIES ABOUT BRITAIN IN THE WAR!! U with me? "We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing". |

I may not be a Brit, but I am with you all the way. The Brits don't get all the credit they deserve and should have better, higher quality films about them. And I believe it is spelled St. Nazaire but I don't know about how the admiral's name is.

God Yes How about a movie following the SAS in north africa and then in the Germany itself later on in the war. Or my fave would be to follow the "red devils" attack on Pegasus bridge. They could use stephen ambrose's book like they did on BoB. --------------------------------------------- 8:50 AM 7th July 2005 London - Never Forget. |

all the way mate im getting sick of americans getting all of the credit for ww2. if you have ever seen a film called U-571, you'll know what i mean. Its all about an american submarine crews mission to capture one of the prized enigma machines which were used to communicate and pass on orders of strategic importance between the germans. now this was originally a royal navy victory, but the u.s are getting all of the credit for retrieving the enigma. just another 'america won the war single handedly' war movie Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. Winston Churchill 1874-1965 |

Yeah thats a very good point! I totally forgot about U571, another American Victory eh?

I found that film offensive.
The US were not even in the war when we captured the engima machine (I could be wrong) I'm not moaning at the US, just the person who wrote the movie. --------------------------------------------- 8:50 AM 7th July 2005 London - Never Forget. |

Yes, you are wrong.(about the date)
Some history: "An attack by a British destroyer on a German U-boat in the Eastern Mediterranean in October 1942 altered the course of the entire war. The capture of secret German Enigma coding material from U-559, at the cost of the lives of two of HMS Petard's crew, enabled Bletchley Park's codebreakers to crack a new Enigma system introduced to cover a maximum U-boat offensive. After ten critical months with no U-boat signals intelligence available, this was the crucial factor in defeating Hitler's Atlantic U-boat wolf packs before they could starve Britain into defeat in the winter of 1942-3." -> oktober 1942 -> the u.s. is almost a year at war -> but as you can see; it was a BRITISH destroyer who did the job btw i do agree that there should be more movies about the British forces and let's not forget the Canadians. |

Yeah Canadians too. It would be cool to see a film about the British and Canadians invading at Sword, Gold and Juno beaches. The Brits and the Canadian Engineers invaded a German Occupied port in France (cant remember the name). It was a great military blunder, but it was one that helped win the war, after plans for operation overlord had to be changed, to prevent the same thing from happening. Same for the 22 Swordfish Bi-planes that severly damaged am Italian Fleet. Why cant they be remembered or their heroics in WWII??? The deserve it just as much.

It would be awesome to see the full Pegasus Bridge battle as a movie. I just read the book, and Major Frost talks about how "The Longest Day" was totally Hollywood-ised...typical being made by americans, with john Wayne in it. When you read the book, you see of the resilliance of the British soldiers, and their over-all attitude towards the conflict. I mean come on...Wally Parr and his German Anti-Tank gun...blowing holes in the water tower till the water is shooting out in all directions? Them cursing the Piat Gun? If it was made properly, it would come off as a black-comedy...but thats how these men were during the holding of the bridge.
It would be totally awesome to see this as a movie. But i guess that aint ever gonna happen eh? Oh btw it was The Dieppe Raid that you are talking about Hoobler. countless Canadians, 1000 Brit commandoes, and 50 U.S Rangers. It was a mass slaughter..all in aide of testing the German resistance. Although...if it wasnt for that...Overlord would have caused catastrophic casualties. "Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way." |

I being British am delighted at the response at this forum and I'd just like to point out that their is a game based on the British S.A.S during WWII in North Africa and Germany known as Hidden & Dangerous I and II. The game itself is brilliant and it is worth taking a look at and easily contends against its American
counter-parts. |

Who's seen the films 'The Longest Day' and
'A Bridge Too Far,' if you have seen those you will know that they cover Pegasus Bridge, Arnham Bridge, Sword Beach and Gold Beach. I know these are fairly old but nether the less they are brilliant masterpieces. But I would love to see some decent remakes after all these bloody years. This message has been edited. To be perfectly honest, I'd rather watch some of the old black-and-white British war films than some modern American ones.
Give me 'One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing' or even 'Mrs. Miniver' over utter tripe like 'U-571' or 'Wind Talkers' any day. Yes, the special effects back then were childish by modern standards. But they had what modern films seem to lack: A d*mn good story; well written, presented, and performed. In other words: something Hollywood forgot how to do. As a Canadian, I feel the British put out some of the finest war stories ever put on film. And they bloody well ought to get back at it. As for films from my corner of the Commonwealth: I'm not sure who filmed it, but the set-in-Canada wartime film '49th Parallel' has the finest performances by old-time stars like Anton Walbrook, Lawrence Olivier, etc ever captured on film. (So find it. Watch it.) |

Yes, they should make a movie about the British war effort -- Dunkirk comes to mind...
Just kidding... I am reading "An Army at Dawn" which you ww2 buffs have probably read already. It is amazing that we pulled out a victory out of that mess. Anyhow, they should make a movie about Montgomery's Africa campaign--some good stuff there, and ol' Monty probably wasn't as bad as we Yanks make him out to be. |

My stand on U-571 was that it was a huge insult to us Brits and just goes to show that Hollywood does'nt give a toss about historical facts.
Also the British were in the war much longer than the Americans and have loads of battles which could be turned into a movie. What would be good is if they remade 'The Battle Of Britain' and 'The Dam Busters' but i doubt that would ever happen now. To be honest the only film recently where there were British soldiers was a film named 'Dog Soldiers' which was rather embarrissing besides Sean Pertwees performance, and that film was'nt even historical, oh no it was bloody werewolves ladies and gents. |

Trivia Note to keep in mind about the German Enigma machines: The Poles were the first to (successfully) begin cracking Enigma.
Just giving credit where it's due. |

By the way, there is an excellent British WW2 movie..."Hope and Glory"(1987) about a kid in 1940s London. A great story through the eyes of a child.
I loved the teachers quote to what the war is all about: "The Empire...two fifths of the world...and that's what this is all about. Men are out there fighting and dying to save all the pink bits for you ungrateful little twerps." (pink was british empire on the map) |

I almost forgot about that movie, loptica.
There were a few good laughs in that movie despite its subject matter. Thanks for the reminder. I think I'll head for the video store cause I wouldn't mind seeing that one again. |
