The german u-boat 156 under command of Captain Lieutenant Werner Hartenstein
had as an objective to blow up the oil refinery here in Aruba ''the lago'' because at that time Aruba's refinery was the most important supplier of oil to the allies. Hitler was confident that if the sabotage of the ''lago'' was a succes it will be the end of the war,in favour for the germans. But it wasn't, was god with us that night you be the judge. The objective was to the blow up the oil tankers first and then the oil refinery. It was 16 Feb. 1942 excactly 1:31 in the morning when they fired the first torpedo, it hit directly in the ''Pedernales'' an oil tanker that was lieing 2 miles of the coast of Aruba. (later the ''pedernales'' was fixed up together and brought to America for the d-day landings) They then attack another oil tanker ''de oranjestad'' this tanker sunked a few min. afterwards. When they got closer, 1:41 in the morning it was time to use the main deck gun, on the refinery, but the stupid bastards were so enthusiastic that they forgot to take of the lit that protects the water from going in when they dive. That thing blew up killing one of them and injuring another. The thing is in the bay was lieing an American transport ship the '' Henry Gibbson'' with 3000 ton tnt dynamite. If that was hit the half of the island would of been gone. With this attack Aruba would be the first country to be attacked in the western hemesphere by the germans. As for the u- 156 it was sunked on the 8 of march 1943 by an allied plane on the eastern side of barbados. Their were no survivors. Meanwhile in Germany posters were put up everywhere that the attack on the refinery was a succes, all they had to do know was to wait.. And that was the war brought to Aruba Any questions or comments? This message has been edited. Its easy to say that "those stupid bastards" left the hatch open. Quite easy to talk from a chair like that.
I wouldnt show a german design Mg as my sig and call them stupid bastards. "There is nothing more exhilirating, than to be shot at with no results" Sir W.L.S. Churchill |

Yea that what i meant.. And another thing at that time we were supplying the brit RAF and the allies in Africa. Normandy too. So we contributed alot in that time, and if we were any bigger we would of contributed troops too, the troops that were formed here had to go to holland, but then they dicided at the last moment that they should stay and protect in Aruba. P.s what do you guys think of what happend that night?
