I just have a question ? Now you have the 101st 506 easy and then you have the 101st 502 . okay just stick with me i was reading the fourm a little bit and somewhere back it said that the 502 took out the 4 88's in st mere englise. but the book band of brothers and the movie clearly states that the 101st 506 easy took them out.

first, the 101st is divided in regiments the 506th 502nd and so on, these regiments are divided into companies A-I or Able through Ida. On D-day Lt. Winters of Easy company of the 506th PIR(parachute infantry regiment) led a squad of 12 men to take out a battery of 4 105's on a farm called Brecourt Manor. The 502nd had no involvement with this action.(Winters was awarded the distingueshed service cross(DSC) I don't know about the 4 88's taken out by the 502nd?

There were 88's to. In total they took out about 9 nine guns (that day?). I also think that Winters and his men took out some 88's, but I could be wrong. I have the dvd, so I'll check it when I have time. Now I must study, stupid exams Mad

Private John Steele was with the 82nd, not the 101st. He was a member of the 505th PIR.

Check this out! Here you have some info about Pvt. John Steele. I hope it helps you.

"One gripping story from that day is that of Private John Steele. A member of the 82nd Airborne's 505th Regiment, Steele jumped from a C-47 Dakota with his fellow paratroopers. Avoiding the flames of a burning building, he accidentally landed on top of a church spire and dangled helplessly above the German defenders. A burst of gunfire struck him in the foot but he made no sound and pretended to be dead as soldiers underneath him fired at the descending paratroopers. Although temporarily deafened by the tolling of the church's bell, Steele survived his ordeal and was later hauled into the steeple and captured, only to escape a few days later"
-----------------------------------------------
"He was but one of thousands of Allied paratroopers hurtling through the dark skies over Normandy in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944 but the recounting of his story in Cornelius Ryan’s book, The Longest Day and later in the film adapted from it made John Steele, 505th Regiment U.S. 82nd Airborne Div. perhaps the best remembered Private to take part in Operation Overlord.

Instead of jumping into a well lighted drop zone, Steele found himself falling into the center of the burning and panicked village of Sainte Mere Eglise. Pvt. Steele’s problems were compounded when a bullet ripped through his foot. His drop was broken not as he hit the ground but when his chute snagged the steeple of the parish church. Steele’s efforts to free himself came to naught. The knife he was using to cut away his harness fell from his grasp.

Steele was within earshot of German gunners on the roof of the church and survived by playing dead for 2 hours. Then chaos subsided for a few moments giving the German garrison time to cut the injured paratrooper down and take him prisoner"
