Those of you who have seen We Were Soldiers, ay remember a haunting song in the film, played at the last bayonet charge. You may also notice that this song is unmistakeably Scottish.
Well being Scottish, i had to delve into the history of it.

The lament, "Sgt MacKenzie", is written and sung by Joe Kilna Mackenzie son of Maria McCabe and the late Alex McCabe of Provost Christie Drive, Rothes. Joe wrote the song in memory of his Grandfather a Moray man, from Bishopmill, who along with hundreds of other Seaforth Highlanders from the Elgin/Rothes area went to fight in the great war. Sgt Charles Stuart MacKenzie was bayoneted to death at, the age of 35, while defending one of his badly injured colleagues in the hand to hand fighting of the trenches.
Joe's granny, Catherine MacKenzie Rizza, was a daughter of Sgt MacKenzie. She returned to Moray from Glasgow and settled in Rothes where her daughter Maria and son Charles along with her grandchildren and other members of the family were living. Through the years Joe spent many hours listening to her tales of his great grandfather. Sadly his granny died three and a half years ago and never got to listen to the song. Recently Joe visited her grave in Rothes and sang the song to her.
Sgt Mackenzie's wife, Joe's great granny also called Catherine, lived in Rothes for many years. Later in life she married Lewis Allan, North Street where she lived until her death in 1955.
Joe plans to visit France sometime in the future to play Sgt MacKenzie at the grave of his great grandfather.
I just thought that anyone who has any interest in any war, would want to know this story. He gave his life protecting his Comrade, and should be remembered as a hero...because he was.
I strongly advise anyone who reads this thread, to go and listen to it. Its the most haunting song ive ever heard. heres the link Sgt MacKenzie
When u get to the page, click the link for Quick Time, not Media Player, cos this is the proper, full version. Enjoy!!

No not weird at all. Its supposed to make you feel that way. Why else do you think they have pipers on the battlefield.

However the video is gone. Maybe you can put it on youtube?

There ain't no sound prettier than the pipes ablaze.

Hi. Very nice tune. I am in a Celtic Pipe Band. Do you know where I can get the sheet music for this? I will forward your remarks to our Pipe Major. We may be able to learn to play this tune for our military funerals.
Thanks for sharing.

I am guessing you are in the military. If so, where were you serving....unless its just a crazy neibour with his new BB gun, THATS happened to me on several occasions.

I work in security, it was criminals doing the shooting.
I've been shot at a few times, from .22's to .45's, they were lousy shots though, close but no cigar as the saying goes.
The first time, my reaction was more surprise and anger, on subsequent occaisions my reactions were more "bloody hell, not again".

Did you know the soldier featured on the cover of the book(We were soldiers) was from England..And that he died in the September 11th attacks trying to save as many people as he could.

I am always reluctant to speak for Rick. He was so articulate and intelligent. I know that whatever I say about this, Rick would have said it better. Rick’s death on 9-11 was his last heroic act in a life filled with heroic acts. But there were many, many other heroes that day. Among them were Wesley Mercer, Jorge Velazquez, and Godwin Forde - Rick's deputies. They followed Rick back up those stairs into the flaming tower, attempting a final sweep for survivors, and perished with him when the building came down. I cannot find the words to acknowledge their courage, loyalty, and devotion to duty.

Rick had a special affection for the FDNY Firefighters. After the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993, Rick stayed in the smoldering building for 12 hours, helping the firefighters rescue the trapped and injured. From that day on, he loved those guys. He admired their courage and professionalism. I can say this with every certainty – Rick was proud to die in thier company.
