That is correct. The 101st became an air assault unit although they are called the 101st Airborne. For what I know they never jump out of planes but i could be wrong. but yes to answer you question simply, join 82nd to jump out of planes and the 101st to repel out of a helicopter.
i watched a program about the history of the airborne. both the Screaming Eagles and the aAll Americans still exist, but they dont just out of planes, neither do. Jumps from planes where made absolete just after korea (dont quote me, but i know they were deffinately gone come 'Nam). They aint called paratroopers anymore either...as you probably would have guessed. im not to sure whether they still leap from their blackhawk helicopters, as far as i know thats just marines (or maybe thats heuy's). anyway, jumping from planes is mostly under taken by (wotever the american equivelant of the SAS is) on widley sectret and covert missions.
"We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing".
hoobler, what are you talking about? there were combat jumps from planes in Korea as well as vietnam. AND my very good friend who was in the 82nd airborne during the Grenada conflict had made a combat jump from a c-130 hercules. im sure the airborne still makes combat jumps from planes now but maybe not as common. by no means are they obsolete.
yes Basher u are totally correct. I sat today (tuesday the 26th) and watched a program detailing the differences between WWII paratroopers and modern ones. It was a total contradiction...1st the sed that they dont jusmp any more, and now they say they do...its weird. So dont make me out to be an idiot...i was only depicting on a program i watched...blame The History Channel.

Dont just listen or read from one source, always do second and third checks. But your original post didnt come from the history channel. They are notorius for running innaccuracies, but they wouldn't have said all that, so some of it was stuff you made up or decided that it sounded cool...
um no mate. i take my knowlage of the history of WWII very seriuously. I wouldnt make something like that up. I watched a program about modern warfare, either on the History Channel, or one of the discovery channels. It sed how there was not much need for troops to just from planes, and that the only ones who did were elite forces going on covert missions. Ok granted there was maybe the odd time i got my facts wrong, but that is deffinately wot they sed. I do not appreciate being accused of makeing this up, i wouldnt do that. So please, dont make me out to be an idiot.

Both divisions jump from planes and both divisions jump from helicopters (I mean jump not rappel). The 101st has the 187 Regiment which is one of the most honored airborne regiments in the Army. It's Parachute now, but it has been glider, air assault (rappeling), and air landing.
The 101st Airborne/Air assault does primarily rappel but it's still the home of the mighty Rakkasans and they're known for being all the way Airborne.
