About 0300 the group came across Lieutenant Robert Cole, commander of the 3rd battalion of the 502nd with about fifty men. Cole was leading his column towards his objective, Causeway 3 and the coastal batteries at Ste. Martin-de-Varreville.Since that was roughly the same direction Winters and his men were going, they fell in line. Groping their way through the predawn darkness, Winters watched in disbelief as Cole studied his map with the aid of an unsheilded flashlight. Winters knew Cole and considered him a man who felt invincible, that he could never be hit, and he doubtless would have scoffed the young lieutenant's discomfort over his blatant breach of normal saftey and common sense. Coles bravado would earn him the Congressional Medal of Honor a few days later but would cost him his life in Holland.
(next paragraph was the description of the horse/wagon scene and more Cole reference)
