Hi,

I am wondering if there is any role for the dutch resistance in this game. Of course the leading role was for the allied armies to liberate Holland. My uncle played an important role as a 17 year old member of the dutch resistance. He lived in Tilburg and was send out into German defenses for reconance duties because he spoke fluent German and new the area from Eindhoven to Arnhem very well.

I still talk to him about these events and it has always played an important role throughout his life. Of course for me it is special to experience market Garden from somebody who was there.

Cheers,

Erwin

Yes definately and as you said he was a sort of undecover spy and they would report back to hq where baker and his sqaud would get orders, the dutch resistance played a large part in market garden so i think well defiantely see some and see the horrific things they may have seen aswell as the soldiers that fought

Wow, you must be very proud of your uncle! it is a shame that the British troops at Arnhem did not make good use of the ressistance like the American divisions did.

I don't think that the use of resistance would have helped in Arnhem, other than NOT to attempt the entire operation. To many stupid errors in Arnhem: COM radio's didn't work, intelligence was ignored, landing area and target were 8 miles apart. With just 1 single of those mistakes you could have lost. It was a miracle that John Frost and his men held on for so long, which is saying something of the english fighting spirit. You have to see this in the light of competition between two generals. Montgomery (UK General) had this wild plan which, if it worked, would end the war at christmas '44. Eisenhower should have opted for use of resources to Patton (US General). On the other hand, as i am living in Nijmegen, my parents were liberated by this wild plan.
