As always, I take very seriously the advice I receive from my peers in this forum so, I have revisited the scene and made the following changes: For GiapLev: maybe u can get closer on the moment of impact and add some motion sketching? - The impact is now a "very" upclose, and personal experience. impact wasn't "big" it just seemed like a splash - The impact is now as impacts should be...explosive! only one kamikaze? - Once there was one...now there are three! For Monty-Dan: I thought the Battle ship noises were a bit excessive - I toned down the dual alarms by making sure they didn't run together and are now only in a portion of the scene instead of through the entire scene. I would have liked to see a view from the plane heading towards the ship, after all it is called Kamikaze - You are now so close to our daring pilot that you can smell the Saki and see the view! For Joe-90: Watch out for directional continuity. Seeing the Zero coming from the left, then from the right, can be a confusing distraction to the viewer. - Directional continuity has been attempted by keeping all three attacks in directional succession (did I say that right?) For Biltongbru: Problem with IL2 ships are that all their aa guns flashes are 100% synchronized and thus not realistic. - Shot angles were filmed either, from a distance or from first person to lessen the visibility of synchronized aa. Much better
I liked the addition of the dream sequence. It's small touches like that that give a movie life. It's a fine line mind you between style and cheesiness, once you cross it, the movie is screwed. You were teetering on the edge here, but I think you pulled it off. As for the rest, yep, much better. Now imagine all that with some frantic camera shake. Also, pump up a lot of the SFX. It didn't sound like the way I would expect it to sound if I was there. Sound mixing is a whole new playing field. I'm still trying to get to get to grips with it too after many failed attempts. |

I almost added another 5 seconds to the dream sequence, but now, am glad I didn't. My intention was to portray his spirit leaving his body or a pre-death flash back. What I did add was the 4 second vision of his mother holding him as a baby....which also may be interpreted as his wife and child. I understand that you liked the sequence, but tell me what made it teeter so I don't fall into the cheese dip or step into something worse in future productions. BTW...You're right...The SFX were a bit limp, weren't they? haha. I am rendering a new file with some new AA added and I amped the overall sound tracks. I'll just edit the links and let you know. I like it. 100% better
Now again, only my opinion, another aspect: You must always keep the viewer 100% "engaged". If you have a fast situtation like a Kamikaze attack, try to shorten your clip lengths and have a succession of action packed, interesting short clipped angles and zooms... You want to convey a frantic situation that will also include shake etc. (i getting carried away now sorry Sometimes it is good to watch similar situation tv programs and then to try and check out the clip lengths; average 2-3 seconds with plenty of 1 sec? " Dogfights" series for me is a good standard, you can view them on You Tube as well to look and learn. |

Where would I insert the shake? Most of my shots are suspended angles. I Thought it was considered an IK when suspended cameras shake. Maybe the first person view of the guns before the plane blows? Or inside the cockpit? Tell me what scenes that you feel shaking would be good. Thank you! Also, using Sony Vegas, can you ad shaking via an effect or do I need to reshoot the clips with shaking? |

I would say cockpit and plane close-up shoots needs shake.
Vegas itself does not have a proper shake function except the jitter option within the film effects plug-in that I normally use for cockpit shoots. You can make up your own shake with the track motion function. I use that a lot. There is a plug-in on the market compatible with vegas from newblue. Just do a Google search on newblue for info. |

It is difficult to explain everything here: look at the top right of the vegas screen and there is an info button that release a help window. Under the index tab search for track motion; everything is very clearly explained there.

GAH! NICE EFFECTS
Love the dream vision and the special effects, sound was OK but the AAs sound somewhat irrealistic, but overall GREAT improvement. Love it. Now if only there were motion skectching on moments of impacts that would add the nice touch to this short test |

I have found nothing as good yet as After Effects Motion Sketcher for adding fake camera shake. There are other tools that might do the job in Vegas, and I have yet to learn how to use them.
There was a great tutorial on using the Motion Sketcher listed in the tools sticky but it is dead now. Luckily I have a copy so have added a pdf link in that thread. If you want to see the difference that motion sketcher makes, have a look at this test clip I made.
