I watch allot of IL2 movies on Utube and find that most of my favorites have the games sound effects; some with music some without. I caught myself today turning off a new movie shortly after the music began without sound effects. Am I the only one that thinks that music without sound effects renders a movie inferior?

Forgive me if this is an old hashed out topic.

good hunting to all,

Music can often be used to make a bad movie look good, if we like the music, so yes I agree.

Music can and should be used to lift a movie, and be designed to elicit more emotional involvement, but not as a cover up of bad filming.

One of the best action sequernces I can remember is the Omaha Beach landing in Saving Private Landing. Do you remember it? Do you ermember how music was used to make it more exciting or involving? Well, there was no music at all for the entire sequence. The filming, cinematography, character involvement and amazing sound effects made it work.

Music has it's place, for sure, but not everywhere.

As Joe has already mention music sound track is essential part in any movie along with excellent sound effects (SFX), or ambience to bring the movie into full circle.

Best Regards

Having done both music and sound effects they both are necessary. Most Il2 footage is presented as a montage, where music suits it very well.

My own opinion is that if you don't use music then your sound effects better be pretty good.
You can't rely on the game sounds alone, even the mods. They are great for gaming, but they lack the realism that a film maker may want. I find over dubbing actual planes is better, and much more detail can be given to sounds like the gunfire and explosions.

Anybody seen / remember 'Cloverfield'?

There was no music whatsoever in that movie. I have a friend who studies movie music composition and he had a reading once of the guy who did Cloverfield's sound design. He told that it was a real challenge to make the movie work without music and they had to make somekind of moviescore with just the soundeffects. They did that really well if you ask me... Smile

Oleg: "Yeah my point as a man is quite strong, thanks for asking."

Personally as a veiwer not a maker of movies I much prefer music videos over sound effects but it depends very much on the music. Some heavy metal is ok but needs careful thought and rap cr*p is a no no in anything. Having said that I have heard some good heavy metal sound tracks. If you can find it 'The Legend' by Gutted is a good example of what I mean as is 'Ace of Spades' by Yago 9. Joe 90's movies are also good examples of matching the sound track to the action.

Well IMO, if it is just a frag vid (with just the kill shots and limited if any dogfighting) then it has to be music. My prefrence is metal but whateva floats your boat.

If it is a proper movie, then I guess anything goes. The game sounds work well in movies. And also a mix of music and sounds can be quite good as well.

The main problem is that everyone has an opinion on what music sounds good. Some people like the heavier stuff, some like pop and some like anything. If you put music in your vids - then it is likely that you will limit your audience.

As for rendering a movie inferioir, well... it depends on the movie. I think (well actually 'I know') some people violently hate music in movies. All I will say to them is that; thinking in that way will only create a prejudice against any movie with music [no kidding! Veryhappy] and this might make them miss out on some really good movies.

My advice is, by all means have an opinion on the topic - but don't let that cloud your judgment. Rate each movie based on whether or not the music works (as well as other things like the story, camera angles ect.)
