Hello!

This is a docu-drama movie of Aussie legend Nicky Barr of 3 squadron RAAF. One of the main reasons behind this was kind of experimental to try to use other game engines in the story telling process. I tried to be as accurate as possible from accounts of Barr's exploits most of which are actually unfilmable (and vary) and go far beyond what is depicted here, and the usual "artistic licence" thrown in.
A big thanks to Joe90 for taking a look at a pre-release and some tips, and for convincing me to actually release it at a point where I was about to scrap it.

On a tech note I had a few AA frapping probs here and there as this was mostly done on my old PC, however I'm on a new rig now so no worries.
On a historical note, there's a couple o' blips, at a point where a milestone event is mentioned for 3 squadron there's a Kittyhawk in the background that should have been a Tomahawk, they did'nt get the Kitty for another month. And keen eyes may spot a glipmse of a 109 in one shot with a PikAs emblem, although JG53 were in the theatre in Dec '41 they only stayed for 3 weeks and went back to Sicily, the event in the movie is 2 weeks later, but I left it in just to see if you're paying attention Smile

In addition, this is a quickie I made while finishing up Desert dogfighter and is a short tribute to a JG27 pilot. Again the object was to try to use not only other game characters but scenery and "props" to tell the story and enhance the appearence of the movie.

I'm not looking for any full critiques of this stuff but comments and views are welcome, some of this stuff may work some not, it's an attempt to introduce other elements as I'm not going down the "real human" route Smile and I'll not be making a serious il-2 movie again although I might dabble a bit if any decent WWII mods get made for ArmA.

what? you were going to scrap that???? Surprised

AWESOME MOVIE MATE

ArMa + IL2 = WIN

That's what I've been saying this whole time, when will someone mix the two

It takes an Artist to overcome the limitations of the tools, and you did that by using the AAA mods and ARMA engine

That scene between the clouds, was epic!

Well balanced movie also, not the we're heroes and don't suffer any casualties type of movie

~S!~

You need blokes like me to fly Blue side!, BE SURE!

Hi Wolfbics,

I have just watched your latest movie, but unfortunately I have no time to give a review as I am setting off to London in a few hours with work.

However, I would like to congratulate you on a superb movie, you have got all the key elements that make a very good movie well mixed and balanced Thumbs Up

If you have not yet watched this movie please do so, you will not be disappointed, one of the best this year in my opinion.

I commend you and all your hard work and planning you must have put into this movie, it shows, and if I get time I will post a review.

Great movie Cool Smile Thumbs Up

Cheers

Hi Wolf, well you already know what I think Thumbs Up

This, I think, is the essence of using two different games to tell a great story.

Another masterpiece, and I really hope ArmA do some WWII mods so we can see what you do with them.

A lot of good stuff there, but I think the music selection is really what put it over the top for me. Great Job.

That's some of the smoothest panning I've seen. Do you use Mousemove and, if so, what's your setting?

Thanks for the nice responses,

Jafa, cheers mate, as far as I've seen of your stuff on youtube you're about the best Il-2 movie maker I've ever seen in terms of technique, you need to try a story driven one for sure!

Waffen, thanks, ArmA is a great tool for movie making, I wish there were more WWII mods though.

MrVH, thanks! you are still the story-meister as far as I'm concerned.

Monty, cheers guv, no need for full review. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't got around to watching your BOB movie yet although I think I d/l'd it on another PC, I'll try to give it a whirl this week and comment.

Joe, yeah, I could have done without trainsim to be honest but you have to blame Barr for that!

Natedawg, thanks!

Lazarus, there's no mouse panning in the IL-2 parts, anything that looks like slow zooms etc is usually camera plane, if there's a specific bit you mean tell me what and I'll explain. Arma has the ability to fly a free cam around with direction keys and zoom which is a great tool for movie making.

Hi Wolf

I enjoyed this movie....many times you hear on this forum that a movie should have a story...well, you are a master story teller and the way with the Aussie accented narrator was very skillfully done. You followed a similar style as your previous movie on the NZ pilot but with vast improvement. In my opinion the voicing made the movie much more "professional"

Your ventures with Arma worked very well, giving the movie an extra touch.

I especially found the ending with the B&W stills very striking!

I waited a long time for this movie to appear but it was worth the wait. Congratulations on a brilliant piece of work!

Wow, wow and a sprinkle more wow.

That was nice. I know it sounds kind of daft when you describe a war film as "nice", but it had a warm feeling about it. I liked the 3rd person narrative that made it sound like a tribute to his close friend. I think someone who's never heard of IL2 machinima, or don't understand any of the technical stuff you did will look at that and still enjoy it. It has universal appeal.

Thanks for the experience.

Wolf, "The Desert Dogfighter" is a showcase movie and as such we have included it on flightsimmachinima.com along with a Golden Oleg for being an outstanding biodrama.

Falcon, TOAD, biltong, snatchio, thanks very much for the comments. DW! I'm honoured! why you never made another movie after DEA is a mystery, it's my fav desert IL-2 movie of all time!
Joe (and oleg committee) thanks for the listing and the Oleg Smile I can now retire in peace, lol that is officially my last IL-2 movie.
I started making IL-2 movies last summer originally as a hobby and pastime but found on this last effort that it started to get frustrating and to some degree even not enjoyable.
I've also started fiddling around more with the human game character and similar aspects of movie making as opposed to flight sims which is probably going to be more satisfying in the long run. I dont think I'll even bother with BOB/SOW to be honest, I have to say I'm more interested in the Korean war sim using the same engine and connected to the Oleg team.

PS Joe, I'm sticking this move up on M4T next week so you might want to link that as a better and faster download on flightsimmachinima as opposed to magaupload.

Sure Wolf, I'll watch out for the link.

Keep us up to date with your human interest developments. It's a topic that I really want to find out more about.

I'm going to have some free time on my hands shortly and fancy a play with ArmA, and anything else that has good character animations, as well as a good fun game to play Winky
