A relatively new term that opens more doors and shakes off the shackles of machinima. The word has been around for a while, but only recently it has started to gather support. It seems to have come from Tom Jantol (Cirque du Machinima: The Cuckoo Clock) http://www.mprem.com/e107/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.259 with a better description by Overman http://z-studios.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10
What is it? Well, it’s kind of an outside-in approach as opposed to inside-out. The filmmaker has an idea outside any game engine and then chooses whatever tools are best to turn the idea into a movie. Inside-out film making is the opposite and takes a game engine and uses that to bring the film idea into that environment. It’s encouraging to see more filmmakers in here being more creative and using whatever tools they want. You still can’t beat IL2 as a tool for depicting WW2 aircraft and it will continue to be used for a long time, even after BoB:SoW is released. If you’re interested in reading, or even contributing, to the wider digital filmmaking community, here are some places that are worth a visit: http://www.gamerztheatre.com/index.php?option=com_conte...ew&id=571&Itemid=413 this rant has picked up a fair bit of interest across forums and blogs. Aye, the debate goes on, I dont like the term myself I prefer virtual movies. I can understand that thread at gamerztheatre because the movie refered to at machinima.com is what I'd call a gameplay video which constitutes about 90% of stuff on youtube, but as all have said it's still technically machinima...erm kind of
