"The Advisory Board of the Flight Sim Movies and the IL2MovieDataBase websites hereby announces an IL2 movie competition, procedures and rules as indicated below:

This is a "Short Movie Fun Event", with both intangible and tangible prizes (including $100 USD), in which you can express your skills on film for the enjoyment of the viewers and compete against your colleagues for the honor of being the best. The required movie duration will be very short to make it easier for members to enter with limited available production time.

Although the Competition will be announced on all the popular IL2 sites, the administration of the Competition will be handled through this UBI Movie-Maker Forum. Persons wishing to enter the Competition will do so by Private Message contact via this UBI Forum; thus UBI registration will be required.

A Community Vote will be conducted via this UBI Movie-Making Forum. Based on that vote, a Short List of the top five movies will be established. The Competition Judging Panel (the aforementioned Advisory Board) will then select a winner and runner-ups.

The winner will receive a virtual trophy...the coveted Flight Sim Movies Gold Eagle Award:

Any individual unique artistic and/or technical achievements will be recognized as deemed warranted by the Judging Panel.

Tangible prizes will include:

A total of $100 USD

Also Oleg Maddox's 1C Company will graciously provide an additional Prize for the Winner of the IL2 Movie Competition:
A FREE download of any GAME from 1C Company's Official Website:

This Prize is valued at up to $50USD/40 Euros.

Also, the winner will receive a free multi-featured DVD of the IL2 movie "Faith, Hope, and Charity" (a $15 USD Value):

Additional prizes may become available for 2nd and 3rd place finishers and will be announced in the future, and any additional sponsors willing to offer a tangible prize should contact the Competition Administrator (Doolittle 81). Such sponsors will still be allowed to enter the competition, themselves, if they so desire.
All entered movies will be indexed at the IL2MovieDataBase website and the Winner will be specifically considered for placement with the Best of the Best at the Flight Sim Movies website, as well as being nominated there for an award of a Golden Oleg.

Entering the Competition:
Effective immediately you can enter by submitting your high resolution movie using this Entry Form at the FSM Competition Website before midnight GMT, 15 July 2008. The entry should be in AVI or WMV format. This is the only entry route and these are the only acceptable formats. Movies posted at any other location or in other formats, such as in flash format at youtube.com, will not be considered.

Upon submitting your movie, you must also send a Private Message (PM) using this UBI forum to the Competition Administrator (Doolittle81) which will include the title of your movie....this will confirm that you are entered and also that you are a registered member of this UBI Forum.

The Administrator will regularly publish on this UBI Forum in this thread a list of the people who have entered, along with their movie title.

Community Voting:
Beginning 16 July, the entered movies will be viewable in blip-tv format at the FSM Competition Website where links will also be provided to download locations for the high quality AVI/WMV versions.

Members of the UBI forums can each cast two votes for their two favorite movies. The votes will be sent by PM to the Administrator (Doolittle81). Voting will begin on 16 July with a cutoff date for voting at midnight GMT on 31 July 2008.

On 1 August 2008 the Administrator will post a Short List of the five movies which received the highest number of community votes. The Competition Judging Panel will then select the winning movie which will be announced on the 4th of August.

General Rules
a. Each registered UBI Forum member is allowed to enter only one movie.

b. The movies must not have been previously released.

c. Primary footage source must be from the IL2 game engine. You can use other supplementary sources as well, to include other Games/Sims, CGI, SoundFX, SpecialFX, 'real life' film footage, etc.

d. Minimum movie duration of 3 minutes.

e. Maximum movie duration of 6 minutes.

f. Maximum movie file size of 100 Mb.

g. The Competition Panel reserves the right to disqualify grossly sub-standard movies from the competition before being published on this forum as candidate movies. The Judging Panel will screen all submitted movies before being tabled and exercise this right if necessary. Movies with visible icons, HUD displays, on-line text, visible fraps logo, etc, will be disqualified.

h. At the conclusion of the Flight Sim Movie Competition, the five judges will provide, if they individually choose to do so, detailed critiques on the five Finalist movies, including suggestions if warranted on how to improve future productions. Such critiques will be made privately by PM to any/each of the five Finalists and also, with the concurrence and permission of the individual Finalist/Movie-maker, will be publicly released on this UBI forum for the possible benefit of other movie-makers and those who may wish to actively take on the challenge of movie-making in the future. No comments, positive or negative, detailed or general, will be made by judges on any individual movie accepted as a legitimate entry prior to conclusion of the competition.

i. The Competition Administrator and Panel Judges will not be allowed to enter the competition.

Submit your movie using this form:

http://flightsimmachinima.montydan.com/submit-your-movie

Once it is uploaded, pm dolittle to confirm that you have done so and to prove that you are a member of this forum.

You can then publish your movie if you want, or you can keep it secret until the closing date.

The IL2 Movie Competition Panel will review the five Finalists without restriction as to judging parameters or any pre-established ranking of the finalists.

Please note that this procedure is very similar to that used in other movie competitions, both in the real world cinema and virtual (machinima, etc) movie-making communities. For example, I refer you to the
On-Line Machinima Film Festival in which all nominated (submitted) movies were voted upon by registered OMFF members resulting in a Short-List of three movies (not rank ordered)in each of several categories. The OMFF Judges then selected the Winner(s) from the Short List Finalists. As described at the OMFF site:
As chosen by the OMFF members, the short-lists of finalists for the 2008 festival can now be seen in the festival menu on the right. The OMFF judges will next put them in 1st, 2nd and 3rd order for each category and the results of their decisions will be published at the beginning of May. Congratulations to all those who have made it this far!

Question: To enter the contest do we first upload to a site that hosts first? If so which would you recommend?

I recommend that you upload your movie file (AVI or WMV) to FileFront. It is free and allows files up to 1Gb. (The max file size for this competition is 100Mb)

When you submit your high resolution movie to the Competition using this Entry Form at the FSM Competition Website, include the FileFront URL. At the Competition Website, your movie will be then presented in streaming Blip-TV format and the download link also made available.

After due consideration amongst the Judges, and in the interest of fairness, as Administrator of the Flight Sim Movie Competition I have established the following policy:

The above policy has been added as General Rule "h" to the Competition Announcement/Rules in the first post of this thread.

You may publish/release your movie or a trailer of same whenever and wherever you would like. The only restriction is that no entered movie should have been published Prior to the beginning of the Competition on 20 April 2008.

The best quality is normally found using the AVI format(extension). However, the Windows Movie Maker format(*.WMV)has lately been used with considerable success in quality and reduced file size.
