OK - first let me say that this was a big surprise - given the post title "My first movie"! Excellent apprentice work. Well worth the download.
Since I am in a tight spot, timewise, I`ll just make a listing with grades on a 1-6 scale. Technical quality: 5. You seem to have passed the grades already on your first attempt and avoided the compression/stutter mistakes. Story: 2. I always complain on too much subtitles and intro/outro on the movies, but this one could have done with an immersional introduction. Also, the film is mostly dogfight footage, which needs a story to become moving. Camera angles: 4. Many interesting choices, some very good ones here and there (cam between two planes taking off, smoke to the left and right...fighter diving towards IL2s over dark sea). But ease up on the flyby views - they are the ingame-movie equivalent of sweaty socks, IMHO Lighting: 4. Try using some more extreme lighting conditions to make your film stand out from the rest: Evening, or rain, etc. Music: 4. Nice selection of the japanese singing. Sound: 2. On my rig, I almost couldn`t hear it - volume much too low. Overall: 4. With a proper story, better sound and even more work on cam angles, I expect you to make a film belonging to the all time top 5 on your next attempt. No kidding! |

Thank you so much for the review! I do admit I prolonged the middle where there was just nothin happening at all really. Just some fly-by's. I would agree with you there. Maybe next time I can edit the mission and put in some camera's on the airfields and where the fight mostly takes place.
There definitely could have been more of a story. I think it would have been alot better with a plot and such. The scenes were also kinda jumbled together. I have played with the lighting a bit. I can't seem to find a nice blend between brightness and contrast along with some coloring. Thanks again for your comments! |

With lighting - I did not mean post-game image processing, which was perfect. I only think that most play seems to take place under pleasant weather conditions, which is a shame when there are so many interesting and nice-to-look-at choices of time of day, weather etc.

I enjoyed it. Not in the mood to critique anything.
What are the names of the background musical scores and who did them besides Zimmer? Thanks, Willie Virtus Junxit, Mors Non Separabit. Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati (When all else fails, play dead.) |

The opening theme is called the Backdraft Theme
The japenese song when I showed the KI's is the main theme from The Thin Red Line. And the theme in the middle is called the Crimson Tide Main Theme. All of them were done by Hans Zimmer |

I enjoyed the movie. A couple of comments: First of all, the opening theme is not Japanese. I saw 'Thin Red Line' and the song was sung by the native people of the island, not by Japanese. Also, IMHO, the images were overall too dark. I was not able to distingush the details of the airplanes sometimes. I don't know, it might have been intentional.
Personally, I prefer to watch movies that describe the events that could have happened historically. In this movie, Ki-84 is fighting against Soviet airplanes, like IL-2. Anyway, overall, it is a nice work. Thanks for your effort. [This message was edited by dasist1 on Fri September 03 2004 at 06:07 AM.] |

Well you may not have many reviews, but I thought it was a very good first time effort. Good action sequences and good camera work. There's always a critic though, and if I had to point out something that stood out, it was the early transistion from plane taking off which was a sudden jump, maybe a slow crossfade would have been better, and the same at the end with the plane landing. Small things in a long film. Excellent first effort. Well done.

Hi Mak6,
We have something in common, i posted my first movie about 2 months ago (Down Olga Bridge)and i must say that the Movie Makers and fans of the Movies gave me a great response and provided me with good advise for my second movie. So, as i see some common features in your first film with mine i will pass some of this advise to help you in the future. 1. In general make the clips shorter and use more camera angles during the sequence you are showing. 2. Try to use some sound effects in the movie as this brings it alive. 3. Some story text i feel would have been a positive to your movie. 4. Do not use the mouse at all as posted above, i did one or two sshots with the mouse in my movie, and they are the worst by far. Having said all that, i did enjoy the movie overall and i thought the map you picked was very good. One area i will say you got 100% correct, for me anyhow, was your choice of music, absolutly top draw Well done on your first movie and i hope you do not mind me listing the above. I hope you are going to make more as i think you can go on to much better things judging by your first...all the best. |

No problem at all Monty-Dan. I like reading reviews, good, bad, or even ugly =) Thank you to all who have taken the time to see my video. This topic hasn't been replied to in a while but I would like to give the chance for the people to view it now who didn't get the chance to view it earlier.
The server was temporarily shut down for about 2 weeks. Sorry for the confusion. This link should work: Nakajima Winds |

Thanks for hosting it up again.
I enjoyed the music choices, and the timing the vid had with it. I don't know if it was your use of the blurr affect or the codec you choose but it was too blurry, it just didn't do this sim any justice. Other than that I need to get off my rear and take a crack at this. |
