I was'nt going to make another Il-2 movie but the two tank sims I was waiting for got severely delayed so I cant do my remake of Sam Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron" Big Grin for a while
Anyway, I made a short dogfight movie on the Slovakia map as I was bored and as a kind of tester for if I could get away with using the scenery as I really like that map.
http://www.vimeo.com/907139

I also had a good think about what's been said recently regarding film making as opposed to video makers and regarding content etc, to be honest I dont like my own movies much as I've realised I was going about it the wrong way. Instead of thinking about what shots I want to tell the story like a real world director and then working out how to do them I took the easy option like most people I guess and just used what's available in IL-2 and little else with the result you end up with "talking planes" and the more I think about it a movie that just consists of shots of aircraft from start to finish although initially obvious in a flight combat sim also seems totally bizarre.
Even without real people, which I'm not hung up on at all, some "human" element plus believable ground objects and scenery (confirmed for me in biltongs latest movie) is vastly better than having to use subtitles to explain the story from A to B.
I made a kind of trailer as an excercise of something I want to try and do which would be half IL-2 and Armed assault depending on what WWII mods become available although there's plenty of other uses in that game for scenic and cinematic depth of field shots etc, basically stuff you cant do in Il-2.

You can download these from the vimeo pages if required (look right bottom) although it's better than youtube, streaming is still still a bit grainy and sound not as original.

Hi. Thorse are great videos. I agree that telling things with text is kinda lame and lags the interest of non aviation fans.

I have always been interested how do you make those breathing sounds.

Hi again

Very nice trailers; The cockpit sfx for me is outstanding! Also the integration of AA ground scenes and human figures are refreshing. Please finish this movie, your experiment has worked out well!! Thumbs Up

Great, little masterpieces both!
The sound editing + cinematography are outstanding and the trailer accomplishes it's purpose 1000%!
I'm eagerly waiting for the full movie now...

I am in awe! Great short film movies!

There is an IL2 movie competition/contest to be announced in the coming days. The Max Duration of entries will be approximately 5 minutes.....I think that you would be an odds-on favorite should you choose to enter. I hope you will!

In any event, yours are great little movies/trailers.....Five minutes in the Comp will allow you to tell a good story.......Hint: make sure that every movie, however short, has a Story...with a Beginning, Middle/climax and an End.

Andy,
Mask breathing sounds you can get in several places like simviation where users submit sound packages for the FS series on this page
http://www.simviation.com/fsdsounds.html
you will find them included in the sounds for modern jets mostly but some nice engine sounds for WWII planes here also, the sound I used came with a Tornado. All the other sounds in the clips including "normal" breathing you can get at sounddogs the biggest free sound site, apart from creaking stress sounds from CFS2 (I'm sure Falcon used this in FHC Winky)

Giaplev,
Be a while yet!

Biltong,
It's actually two different movies, sorry my wording was a bit strange, the first movie was just a simple dogfighting short I said "tester" I meant by deliberately putting more views of scenery( even from in cockpit view) in where you would normally avoid it because it looks better than any other map.
I haven't actually started the Desert dogfighter movie, the "trailer" was a mini movie to explore what was usable in terms of Arma stuff at the moment although I want to use some of the WWII mods coming out, so it was a test of what I could do so far Shots of desert, ural trucks not period but can get away with it, legs, German uniform not Afrika Korps but usable etc. All I'm doing at the moment is thinking about how to do etc. and do I really want to show full face characters anyway etc.Plus I dont have the correct skin which is why the first Kittyhawk shot is a bit grainy there's noseart on it, right squadron, wrong pilot.

Elephant
Thanks!

Doolittle
Thanks, I'm not really the competition type and I'd rather see some newbs having a go.
Regarding story, no need for more reminders or hints I'm not major league although I always attempted the story type movie anyway and not music videos you are aware of this? "Against the odds" was probably my best story driven effort, the story was right with all the correct ingredients, my own opinion is that I told it the wrong way so I want to get at least one movie right. If I cant do it I'd rather leave it unfinished, anyway we'll see, and also only half IL-2 content possibly the whole point for me is to tell the thing without simply having a whole movie of planes talking to each other, early days. The Slovakia movie really was just because I wanted to use that map in something and I was at a loose end movie wise, no point looking for stories there.

Hi Wolf. Nice to see you still around. That Slovakia map is one of the best things to come out yet for improving ground features. It's about time it went past the beta stage. Patch 4.09 also has a very cool increased visibilty range which adds immensely to immersion. I've expermented with that too.

Anyway, cool dogfight making the most of the ground and terrain features. Nice. I only detected one moment of cheesiness! Strangely, the same trick in the Desert Dogfigher trailer was not cheesy at all. Cheesiness is an odd thing Shady

Loved the trailer for Desert Dogfighter. You are dead right, we have to think more out of the box if we want to tell a good story. We need to have our story (or idea) as the core and then we decide what tools to use to film it.

Really looking forward to this one.

...oh and do please consider having a crack at the competition. I know you're not the ego type, but do it for our sakes! Your movies are well appreciated.

Hi Joe,
Yeah, not dead yet, I only started fiddling about with IL-2 again as I'm in sim limbo. I think I mentioned once I like all kinds of stuff, tanks, modern jet combat, etc, been looking forward to several sims coming out, all delayed and not expecting anything now till year end, and BOB/SOW is probably mid next year lol.

I figured out the cheese, it's the cross on the church? Big Grin yep, it's called trying too hard to fit scenery into a shot Big Grin could have been worse I almost put in a washing line shot. understatement is also an odd thing.

This movie contest, I'm supposed to come up with another short movie after just doing two? bit of a tall order guv, dont know if I can manage it.

BBloke,
I had a look around your site a few days ago, very nice work Thumbs Up and with the amount of IL-2 movies around has the potential to be one the biggest flight sim movie sites on the net.
I've never been bothered about submitting movies anywhere etc and I noticed you have three? I think of mine there anyway. my user names cause a bit of confusion, 50p productions, wolf, wolfbiscuits, wolfbics, and now wolf productions are all the same person, plus I dont much like most of my stuff anyway.

Exactly what Andy said. I can amend any entry if you require all to be under the same banner? Just let me know which name you would prefer. The idea behind it is to get all YOUR movies on one filtered page:

http://il2mdb.montydan.com/revolt-in-the-desert?searched=wolf

I'm glad you like it and see it as a valuable resource. It's growing slowly. More by my hand at the moment so I would love to see more submissions.

Tried to view your first movie but it is locked. Says "private" ?
The second one is great and I know the name of the real pilot portrayed Wink
I hope you decide to finish it as his story is worth telling.
Cheers, Ibis. Thumbs Up

A Reminder to all: The Flight Sim Movie Competition continues. Four weeks remain until the Submission Deadline is reached on 15 July. It would be nice to see an entry from the wolfbics 'clan'.
