It seems that the You Tube player has recently been improved: In the past your 16:9 vid was letter boxed in the tiny 4:3 frame. Now the player auto size to the 16:9 format and looks much better. It appears You Tube is on a continuous improvement plan just by looking at all the new features that were introduced this year.

Yes, I noticed that too. It doesn't really matter to me though, as I watch most videos in full screen. What they really need to do though is up the video quality. This is the best I could get out of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLgjBldUQ3o Other sites (like vimeo) have way better quality than youtube. I don't see the problem with better quality. They have so much bandwith and storage, I think they could easily allow video file sizes that are at least twice as large. It's probably a copyright thing... Ta for the heads up, biltongbru!
Youtube has really went through some good changes over the last year, and has to be the place that the biggest potential viewer base is. Now, if only they would lift the 10 min restriction |

Hmm, anyone find the full specs yet of the new quality? I can't find it.
Pigeon, your clip looks like it is higher than 15fps, but not sure. Curious to know resolution, fps, video bitrate, audio bitrate. |

fps: 30
bit rate?? best res 640 X 480 The only site I found with their technical info: http://www.youtube.com/handbook_popup_produce_upload?pcont=bestformats The problem for us unprivileged countries with sslloww lines is that players like blip and vimeo take ages to load and play (frustrating!) where You Tube is bearable but at the cost of res...I presume in UK and US these players are quick due to your fast comms... I never watch You Tube on full screen, the res then becomes a disaster.. |

Hmmm... I have deleted the file from my drive, so I don't know the exact specs. I ripped it from a DVD though, so I think the FPS must have been 24. I'm pretty sure it would be in PAL too. Don't know if that tells you anything... The file size was just over 100mb if I remember correctly. Online Pilot's Guide "If something's leaking and it ain't you, get out!" well... 'youtube' has ~100 million videos, requiring some 1000-2500 terabytes storage (they won't tell exactly). 'youtube' needs 10% of worldwide internet-traffic (20% of http), resulting in app. 1 million $ bandwidth cost per day for the monthly 55 million unique visitors. 'vimeo' has 1 million videos and 350.000 monthly visitors. registered 'youtube' members can publish unlimited numbers of video of max. 1gb/10min per video, 'vimeo' members can upload max. 500mb per week. i guess, it is just a strategic question... 'vimeo' tried to find a niche for the more picture-loving people, 'youtube' wanted all that comes ( and got it). anyway, 'vimeo' has restrictions - more than 'youtube'. just consider, that they don't allow any gaming videos anymore at 'vimeo' and have started to delete all exististing in september this year. it is like everywhere... quality means money needed, whereas money is earned a lot easier with quantity. btw, don't anyone think, i had those numbers at hand... i just had to think about costs and transfer and size when i read pidgeon's post. i haven't had the slightest idea of the moloch hiding in the cables _____________________ deepo of "homeoputes" lapinot, #17 @ simairracing.com |

10% of Internet traffic!!
Biltonbru/Pigeon, ta for that link but I don't think that is the latest for this new widescreen format. I think that is just what they used to recommend to keep it simple for most users. It's 4:3 and not widescreen, and they priobably suggest 30fps as that is easy for them to chop down to 15fps which was the usual standard. I'll dig around some more. |

I uploaded that vid in 4:3 in divX format. It had the black lines though. Seems like 16:9automatically get the 16:9 window.

I placed this question on the You Tube community forum "How to..."
Where do I find the specs of the new wide screen player? What is the: a) frame rate b) pixel resolution (L x H) c) Video bit rate d) Audio bit rate The best answer from the 4 replies : I've checked one of my widescreen uploads and the video as served by YouTube is as follows: *Normal Quality* Format: Flash video Resolution: 320 x 180 Video bitrate: 257.32kbps Audio bitrate: 71.62kbps Audio channels: 1 Framerate: 25fps *High Quality* Format: Flash video Resolution: 480 x 270 Video bitrate: 689.24kbps Audio bitrate: 96.32kbps Audio channels: 1 Framerate: 25fps *fmt=18* Format: MPEG-4 Resolution: 480 x 270 Video bitrate: 501kbps Audio bitrate: 126kbps Audio channels: 2 Framerate: 25fps Does this make sense to you Joe? it sounds quite like the real thing to me, I am surprised at the frame rate but the high quality specs is pretty much acceptable if you do not" big screen" the YT player. The slow frame rate of bliptv is a substantial negative to me,,,,,,,,, |

That doesn't look right either
from what I can find, I can find nothing definitive, lol. Youtube are not giving out the specs yet, but I suppose they will soon. The new widescreen is more like 640×360. Those specs are more like the old specs. As for blip.tv, you can get a higher fps if you convert to flv yourself and upload at your chosen fps. |

I just wish Stage6 was still alive...
I hope there will be another site like that someday soon. Online Pilot's Guide "If something's leaking and it ain't you, get out!" Dolph (SimHQ): "What do you think is your strong point as a man and what is your weak one?" Oleg: "Yeah my point as a man is quite strong, thanks for asking." |

That's sweet!
Now, the next logical question is... how to upload in 720p? Online Pilot's Guide "If something's leaking and it ain't you, get out!" Dolph (SimHQ): "What do you think is your strong point as a man and what is your weak one?" Oleg: "Yeah my point as a man is quite strong, thanks for asking." |
