Some nice fall pictures. Hate I couldn't make it to my favorite small mountain town this fall. One you Civil War buffs should easily guess.
I've ate many good meaks from the balcony The old piers from a bridge from the Civil War days. This message has been edited. Last edited by: MWolfe1963, June, '09, July, '09 |

ad for cooking powder. Frankly, never paid it much mind. Think it's from the 1930's.

Harpers Ferry!
By the way, I don't know what kind of cooking you do, but that is an ad for toilet powder..and the NPS says it dates from 1903-1906 By the way toilet powder has nothing to do with a toilet... |

Bingo...Yea, I never paid it much mind, just had in mind it was baking powder because of the old big factory that was there.
I assume ad for some perfume powder of sorts... June, '09, July, '09 |

If I were a cat I would have died long ago. Main Entry: toilet powder Function: noun Date: 1840 : a fine powder usually with soothing or antiseptic ingredients for sprinkling or rubbing (as after bathing) over the skin So its the predecessor to Gold Bond or baby powder. "We shall never forget that it was our submarines that held the lines against the enemy while our fleets replaced losses and repaired wounds." Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, USN. |

I guess the toilet got all the credit for anything that happened in the bathroom back then.

Yeah perfume, designed to disguise the fact that people never fricking bathed. I learned a week ago that at one point it was considered dangerous to wash ones self with water. Between disease, war and gross stupidity I am sometimes astonished humanity has managed to do as well as it has. "Some ships are designed to sink… others require our assistance." Has it? We are on the brink of destroying our climate... |

Well, yes. At that one point the French at least have bathed twice in their lifetime. Well, once during their LIFE time, technically. After they were born and after they died. Hence why the best perfume was invented by the French __________________________________________ [insert large percent] of people [insert arbitrary decision]. Because of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, Celeon posts some then & now photos he found in a online newsmag.
This photo shows a part of the "death strip", the border area between west and east Germany right next to the town of Ansbach , Thuringia in 1984. The same place in 2006. The minefield is now a football field. The Wakenitz river was natural borderline in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. This photo was taken in 1985, notice the watchtower in the background The same place in 2009, the mega bridges of the A20 Autobahn cross the former borderline between east and west now. The Oberbaum bridge was one of several bordercrossing checkpoints in Berlin, shown here in 1987 The bridge as of 2006 The Bernauer street in Berlin in 1984 And in 2008 The town of Oebisfelde , Saxony-Anhalt in 1982 And in 2008 Zimmer street/Charlottenstreet near the famous Allied "Checkpoint Charlie" in March 1990 , five months after the opening of the wall. A Cold War wasteland. Thats really the same place in 2009 Also in 1990, a east german borderguard looks on as Berliners and tourists colelct pieces of the wall as souvenirs. In 2009. The line of stones marks where the wall once was. Checkpoint Charlie on August 13, 1961 . U.S tanks and soldiers keep an eye on russian tanks and east german soldiers on the other side. One shot would had been enough to start the next world war. Chechpoint Charlie in 2000, a tourist attraction 1984 : Junker Mountain in Thuringia. The death strip goes right over it. 2009 : The forest has reclaimed the death strip This cross marked where Peter Fechter died , a 19 years old bricklayer and one of the first people to be shot while trying to cross the wall. While his friend made it, Fechter was shot in the pelvis by east german border guards. Lying right next to the wall and shouting for help , he bled to death as both , the u.s border guards aswell as the east german guards had strict orders not to go close nor to climb over the wall no matter the circumstances. The threat of a incident which may have resulted in war was present all the time. When the east german guards finally recieved permission to walk unarmed over to him , he was long dead. The cross was replaced by a memorial on the side walk This photo of dying Peter Fechter was shot by a u.s soldier East german border guards carry Fechter's body away from the wall West-German newspaper : "...Help me, please help me ! Vopo (Volkspolizei , Peoples Police) murderers let gunned down refugee bleed to death on concentration camp wall..." This message has been edited. Last edited by: Celeon999, |

Ahh the good old days of detente. At least back then you always knew your enemy was the guy in the hat that was 3 times too big and had a red star on the front.

That was not "detente", that was a war waiting to happen. Fortunately cooler heads prevailed. I remember my old man stockpiling food and water in the basement of our house. He was sure we'd be "living" in a gray world in a few days, time. Not very nice....

Great pics Cel!
I remember that famous night my parents got me out of bed to join them in watching the news showing those amazing images of all those East Berliners climbing onto the wall all those years ago! I can remember it very well! I even did and English essay about it too not long after the famous day, I even got a an A grade for it |

|
![]() |
I wrote one too ! But a few years later on. Dont remember what grade i got for it though. Talking about history... Celeon shows of his new planes for Rise of Flight. Who am i ? This baby is quite hard to fly. Much harder than any other plane in RoF. The rotary engine is a bit stubborn , the noise it produces makes it hard to know at how much thrust you are flying just by your ears and the RPM gauge was for some reason placed down directly behing the control stick. So you either have to turn your head to side or fly a curve so the stick gets out of the way and you can see the gauge. Dont know what Mr.Fokker had in mind with that awkward placement. Did i mention that the middle wing obscures your sight and makes landings difficult ? I absolutely love the british SE5.a ! Just look at all those gauges. Air speed, Altitude, the compass directly in front of you for good visibility, a air pressure gauge and even a temperature gauge for the radiator ! Only a artifcial horizon is missing to make this luxury package complete. A extremely long and powerful engine with a absolutely lovely sound that gives the plane excellent handling. No wonder they called it "Ace Maker" I just wonder, whats the deal about that second mg not being synchronized like the other one ?
|
|||
|
There were two reasons: The synchronizer didn't work too well and the top gun (besides being a backup) could be angled up, enabling shooting from below the target. So the pilot had some sort of a handle to do that while he remained seated ? In the game it looks like he had to stand up and even unscrew some screws to do all that. It would be great to have that feature in RoF |
