try running a raid 0 set....also..just becuse i'm not going to look up numbers..what frontside bus speeds are you running?...also...it's a good idea to make shure that your memory is going to be able to handle any overclocking...and /or screwing around with the voltage...alot of little things can make a huge differance...l1 and l2 cache on the cpu ...is the memory running in dual chanel or is it unballanced...ide harddrives or sata drives ...raid set's or single drives ..dual gpu's or single?...

another thing you might think about is getting rounded and shielded cables for your drives...toss the ribbon cables in the dumpster

I came across SH4 recently and was intrigued. I bought it and immediately realized that the computer that I rescued from the dump was NOT going to play it. I started reading up on the components needed to build my own machine that would play the game at the highest level. I have a list of the stuff I came up with, maybe someone or 2 would let me know if these will do the trick? I haven't bought any of these except the case.

CPU-Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

MB-DFI LANParty DK P35 T2RS

RAM- Corsair XMS2 2GB(2 X 1GB) DDR2

GPU-DIAMOND Viper 3850PE3512O Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

HD(s)-Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s,
Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100

PSU-CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply

Case-Lian-li PC60USB B2 Silver Aluminum ATX Mid Tower (used on E_Bay I paid $34. + $21. shipping.)

Sound Card- Do I really need one? Is the onboard sound good enough? Will it put a drag on my CPU?

I am not sure if I need any supplemental cooling for the CPU (other than the stock fan and heatsink it comes with) or the GPU or the case?

I think that is all the stuff that matters. What do you guys think? Will I be able to play the game with all settings maxxed and everything will be cool? I am not a big "gamer" but I need a new computer(lost 2 to lightning in the last 2 yrs) and I really want to play THIS game! I am an old diesel boat sailor, I spent 2 yrs on the USS Carp (SS338) Balao Class. It sailed for the first time in 1945 and the last time in 1968. USS Carp made 1 war patrol. I served on it for 2 yrs, 1966 & 1967. I also served on the USS Shark (SSN-591) and the USS Nautilus (SSN-571). The old WWII boat was my favorite though. I'll never forget sitting on the bridge all nite in the middle of the Atlantic and looking at the stars or cruising on the surface at flank speed
(21 knots) with dolphins jumping over the bow. Not to mention getting Drunk in some sleazy overseas bar with, among others, the Captain. I really want to play this game, would appreciate any comments or suggestions on this potential setup. If I could max out the game with cheaper components any suggestions in that direction are welcome. Thanks

RAM- Corsair XMS2 2GB(2 X 1GB) DDR2 Thumbs Up I would recomend 1066 or faster speed on this memory, but 800 would do nicely as well.

I'm an Nvidia guy here, but the ATI card is very good as well.

HD(s)-Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s, Thumbs Up I would put 2 into a raid array. 2X150 or 2X75.

Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 Dont bother with the old ATA format SATA is the way to go!

PSU-CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply Thumbs Up But PSU's follow more's law. More is better! As a rule I try to put 30~50% more power than I will need in my box. This will help to keep the PSU running for the full life of the box and also keep the power above what is needed as the PSU ages and looses its peak power rating.

Sound Card- Do I really need one? IMHO,Yes. Is the onboard sound good enough? NO, but it has come a long way! Will it put a drag on my CPU? Yes, but not nearly as much as it use to.

I am not sure if I need any supplemental cooling for the CPU (other than the stock fan and heatsink it comes with) or the GPU or the case? The stock HS fan that comes with intel CPU's work very well even with some overclocking. As for fans in the case, again, more's law fits here as well. 4 at least. 2 intake on the front and side and 2 exaust on the top and the back. Airflow is king!

Will I be able to play the game with all settings maxxed and everything will be cool? Thumbs Up Yes that will run just about anything you would want to throw at it in the next few years. I am not a big "gamer" but I need a new computer(lost 2 to lightning in the last 2 yrs) and I really want to play THIS game! Be sure to get a good surge protector or 2 to keep the lightning out of your box!!! I am an old diesel boat sailor, I spent 2 yrs on the USS Carp (SS338) Balao Class. Agree..airflow is king...as i said in my last post..consider rounded and shielded cables...100 percent improved airflow ..and less rfi

well i am kinda giving up, i loaded up easy tune and over clocked to a 3.4 and got a 3d mark score of 11686 but every time i reset my comp it resets my overclock i know i should overclock through the bios but i don't really know what i am doing, so i will stay happy with what i have , after all it runs great and is very stable. also it seems that if i overclock above 3.5 it becomes unstable.

still i am very happy with my system and it does everything i want it to do.

thanks again for all your help

Is that really a suggestion to put 2 10,000 rpm raptors in raid?

Piontless and expencive, raptors are very expencive and if you want to speed your system up by buying 1 fair enough, but 2?
If you want a raptor, fair anough but stick with 1 you can use a normal HDD for non gamming stuff and it'll still run like the clappers.

pook..ya have to remember...not all systems/cpu's/gpu's/ will overclock the same...your score is great man...it takes time to get comfortable overclocking ..again..over time you may consider a raid "0" stripe set of hdd's but overall i think your doing great..hell your trying ..and you ask before ya do something stupid
.you actually read the manual!!!! you should get an award for reading it and asking questions .. Thumbs Up

Expensive, well maybe. Pointless, I guess it all depends on what your wanting to get done. At the same time though why waste the cash on a raptor at all when you could put a pair of 7200 rpm drives into a raid 0 and beat the raptor for even less $$$.

Then again, I'm a bit of a nut.....I have 4 250Gb drives in RAID 0!! Demonic

RAM- Corsair XMS2 2GB(2 X 1GB) DDR2 I would recomend 1066 or faster speed on this memory, but 800 would do nicely as well.
The motherboard I selected supports up to DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Does it matter whether I get the Dual Channel memory?

GPU-DIAMOND Viper 3850PE3512O Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

My bad, this is the HD I meant to reference, Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

PSU-CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply But PSU's follow more's law. More is better! As a rule I try to put 30~50% more power than I will need in my box. This will help to keep the PSU running for the full life of the box and also keep the power above what is needed as the PSU ages and looses its peak power rating.
I used an online power supply calculator and it said I needed 450W @ 90% load so I went with the 550W model(approx. 30%power to spare).

Case-Lian-li PC60USB B2 Silver Aluminum ATX Mid Tower (used on E_Bay I paid $34. + $21. shipping.)

Sound Card- Do I really need one? IMHO,Yes. Is the onboard sound good enough? NO, but it has come a long way! Will it put a drag on my CPU? Yes, but not nearly as much as it use to.
Any recommendations for a relatively cheap sound card?

My case has 80mm fans, is it worth it to upgarde to 120mm fans?

Will I be able to play the game with all settings maxxed and everything will be cool? Yes that will run just about anything you would want to throw at it in the next few years. I had good surge suppressors on both computers. If you get a close enough hit it doesn't matter what you got for protection-you are toast!

Does the choice of OS matter i.e. which flavor of XP you have? I'm not interested in Vista.

How does using raid with my hard drives help with this game? My thought was a fast HD for the OS and Program files and a second one to put swap files and temp files on would give me plenty of giddyup.

Most people that buy raptor hard drives use it for the OS and program files and the rest in normal hard drives, it's the common sence way of doing it.

Unless your very rich or are looking to add to your E-***** then i'd stick with that.

As for chioce of XP, depends if you want media center or not, but don't bother with 64 and in terms of profesional or normal SP2 there are no operational differences that'll effect gaming or load times.

I might inspire some derisive snickers here, but the system I use works well enough for me although it is nowhere near top of the line.

In the past, I've bought PCs out of the box, modified them, built my own (nightmare), and concluded that you certainly get to pick the best stuff with a BYO, but it's not necessarily a better "deal". For instance, my choice of DVD/CD player/burner would probably be Plextor, and I'd pay significantly more for it than another brand. However, with the lifetime of the macine being about 3 years max, the cheaper burner would almost certainly serve me as well as the Plex would.

What I did about a year ago was buy a Gateway 5228 from Best Buy. I replaced the POS power supply with a really good Antec one, and the onboard vid with a Nvidia GeF 7600 GT by BFG. At the time that was close to as good a card as was available. The box is an AMD X2 4600+ with 2 G RAM. The on-board vid chip is an NVidia, so I imagine the chipset is based on their stuff. Now, I'm sure I could improve the CPU and vid card and would certainly benefit by new drivers....but then again....it works well enough. I'd rather game than mod computers any old day.

Oh, yeah...the whole thing cost a little over $800. I might have built my own with all the best stuff and spent over a grand. Of course then if it failed to POST, there's only me to fix it.

How well does it run SH4? Comparitives are difficult, but I can say that when playing I'm engrossed in the game; I don't think about the computer.
