Permission to come aboard sir.
Has anyone upgraded to Windows 7 and encountered any issues with hardware using this game? It appears that many who have upgraded their OS are reporting issues. Most notably with NVIDIA and their latest drivers. I ordered and received the SH4 Gold Edition and tried it out on the existing card. I figured it wouldn't play very well and I was correct. Ordered a new GTS 250 and am still waiting. Your comments: |

Welcome Aboard, Captain_Smess. Happy to have you with us.
BTW, Permission granted. I'm in the process of putting Win 7 on my computer tonight. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on your problems as I am a ATI addict. All I can say is that I had no issues at all when I played around with the RC1 this summer. _____________________________________ "Head Deep and Keep'em Astern" LtCDR Samuel D Dealey Custom Missions, SHIV Guide, OV..Gato Class, OV..Balao Class, OV..US Subs, Imperial Japanese Navy, Sub Insignia Sigs, Eternal Patrol |

My only problem at the moment is not having a card to use, but then thinking about this I could also chalk it up as a training lesson in the virtues of being patient. I hope your install goes good and you experience no hiccups. I Expect a full report in the morning. |

If I'm not mistaken, Winblows 7 uses the Winblows 2000 drivers for the Nvidia Grfx cards.
So much for a "new" operating system, eh? "Fire at Will!......... Which one is Will?" |

All things went well, even played a little SHIV last night. Hunting was good last night in the Luzon Straits. _____________________________________ "Head Deep and Keep'em Astern" LtCDR Samuel D Dealey Custom Missions, SHIV Guide, OV..Gato Class, OV..Balao Class, OV..US Subs, Imperial Japanese Navy, Sub Insignia Sigs, Eternal Patrol |

Welcome to the fleet, Captain_Smess. I had been reading reviews about Windows 7 for a few weeks now. They all seem to mention how bad Vista is/was and how there were many issues with Vista's performance. Strangely, apart from UAC, which I discovered and corrected promptly within a few days of acquiring Vista (pre-installed on a new PC), I have not had any performance issues whatsoever (i.e., that I can call to mind) with Vista.
I don't know if it's because I have a 64 bit system or that I have 8 gigs of RAM but, I've got no major gripes. The only setback I've encountered is the compatibility issues with the 64 bits. This seems to be consistent with some of the reviews I've read. The graphics drivers were the only drivers they (the reviewers) had to manually install. I did read at least one review that said it would be better to get Windows 7 as a pre-installed OS than to upgrade, due to some upgrade/installation issues. Have to agree with you, Wernher. The only issues I had with Vista was some of the old hardware I had not being compatible anymore. I had an old HP scanner that I just could not find drivers for. I've got 6 gigs of am in my computer, so moving up to 64-bit was the next step for me. As for Win 7, the installation went like clockwork, it even picked up the wireless network I have in the house and set everything up for me, all I had to do was give the password for the wireless network as I have it encrypted. Still have a few more programs I have to add, but I'm up and running again and hardly missed a beat. _____________________________________ "Head Deep and Keep'em Astern" LtCDR Samuel D Dealey Custom Missions, SHIV Guide, OV..Gato Class, OV..Balao Class, OV..US Subs, Imperial Japanese Navy, Sub Insignia Sigs, Eternal Patrol |

The only problem I have had is with SH3 and that was a resolution issue, which after a few attempts at using the Resfix that is available I actually got it fixed. It wasn't that I wasn't doing things right it was just that the system did not want to accept the changes...after 3 or 4 attempts and restarts it finally accepted it and now it runs like a dream.
On the issue of Nvidia drivers, for some reason my system did not like the newest version..192...I think, when I was running on Vista and I have stuck with and will remain with v 182...no problems with them in windows 7. As for the installation, I went for the clean install....went like a dream and installed it on clean drive. When I was running Vista I had installed a lot of my programs on a second hard drive in a seperate programs folder and I have to say that at least 80 percent of them still ran without any problems. One problem noticed is that my G15 keyboard will not acknowledge the .exe files for COD4, COD 5 and rfactor installed on that second drive and I may have to resort to re-installing those programs. Another issue I saw was the lack of the d3d9_40.dll file which is used to run some older games. When Windows 7 loads it does not install all directx 9 files and I had to go to microsoft to download all the avilable Directx files. Lastly and by no means least there are three issues that I find completely and utterly unbelievable... 1 no Calendar 2 no mail both these render me unable to sync Calendar/Contacts with my mobile phone unless I use 'Outlook' which I find to be a fat and flabby program.(Have to hope that Nokia address this issue in their PC suite program) 3. The ability to share with others on a home network, who are not using Windows 7, is another long winded process, so much so I am using a 'flash drive' unttil my wife gets windows 7 on her computer. That said I like '7'...much smoother and appears to be less power hungry than Vista. Maverick 'One of the Older Generation and Proud of it!!!' User of GWX 3.0 and TMO 1.7. I always do a clean install when I install a new operating system. Don't believe in the upgrade version. Being as SHIV is a game that is two and a half years old, it's a nice feature that your able to install an older version of DX on a computer so your games will work. _____________________________________ "Head Deep and Keep'em Astern" LtCDR Samuel D Dealey Custom Missions, SHIV Guide, OV..Gato Class, OV..Balao Class, OV..US Subs, Imperial Japanese Navy, Sub Insignia Sigs, Eternal Patrol |

Since I'm waiting for the economy to straighten out before I upgrade to Windows 7, my curiosity got the best of me and I did a clean install of the evaluation version (just enter zeros for the serial number and it's good for 30 days) into my Virtualbox installation.
It feels very fast, even there! It reports it doesn't like my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard, but Virtualbox takes care of that. When I install it for real the Turtle Beach piece of sheep dip is history. They seem to support their graphics cards for about a year and then act like they were made by somebody else. No more cash for them! My old LaserJet 4050 printer was solved by using a Postscript printer driver. Now the printer works faster and has visibly better quality output. That was painless! Since I'm fearless and have a complete disk image backup of my XP installation, I'm going to check out the death-defying double upgrade strategy. When I bought my Windows XP at the supposed end of its product life, I received a free upgrade to Vista, which has been safely installed on my bookshelf and has run very well there for two years, thank you. No crashes of anything. It's been solid as a rock! My fearless plan is to upgrade XP to Vista and immediately upgrade that to 7. If there are any problems, be assured that I WILL find them. Should be exciting! But I'm waiting until my company decides what it will do with its employees and new owner, etc. Need to keep the decks clear for action! So to occupy the time, I'm going to install the Windows 7 virtual machine into my Linux Virtualbox installation and see if anything explodes... |
