As a complete newbie should I set the realism level low, or could this lead me into a false sense of security, in which case would I be better off with it high?

I started with 18% realism, and slightly moved up when I learned to play the game.
Still not playing with manual targeting

Start low. Get used to the aspects of the game that you can work on. Then gradually add the realism, one thing at a time.
