My SHIV is installed in tne root directory -C:- as I presume many here have theirs, and I haven't had any problem installing patches or mods....(knock on wood...).

The above suggestion about installing SHIV directly to the C: drive instead of it's default setting is mostly aimed at Vista users. For some reason installing SHIV to the default location causes problems and installing the SHIV directly to C: drive eliminates these problems. Don't know the reasons, but have seen it happen.
