Throwing in a real cult series.
Twin Peaks anyone ? A real David Lynch masterpiece that requires a lot of patience and rewatching to understand it.
But soon it becomes much more than a typical criminal story. I only say "There is a man in a smiling bag" The intro to Twin Peaks perfectly reflected the mysteriousness of the series. And of course there is still the Red Room in the extradimensional Black Lodge where the man from another place is usually to be found ! There at least two entry points leading into the Black Lodge but it wont disclose too much. These scenes really made tv history and were referenced to and parodied dozens of times in movies and other tv series I prefer the White Lodge though. Good coffee there too Remember : "The gum you like is going to come back in style !" Chief Wiggum from the Simpsons also once was in the Red Room |

I'm torn on this one. On one hand I used to love the movie. I thought it's campy over the top presentation was great, and it was a perfect "turn your brain off" movie for me. But then I read the book and was blown away not just by the differences (aside from names the movie as about as much in common as what you can read on the dust jacket... maybe less), but also how much better the book was, and it kinda irritates me that it wasn't done better. ___________________________________________ |

wait...Das Boot was a series? Or is this referring to the mini-series?
On the topic of older series two that I always enjoyed were Picket Fences and Northern Exposure. "Some ships are designed to sink… others require our assistance." It's amazing how much I have forgotten about television but, I do remember a couple of old mini-series' that I thought were rather good. Shogun and Shaka Zulu. Since seeing these, I don't remember too many that were as good (that I haven't already mentioned, that is).
I haven't watched a sitcom, weekly series or reality series since about 2003. An occasional documentary is about all I have the time for anymore. My usual channels of choice are The History & Military Channels, A&E, Animal Planet, Discovery or "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" -Matthew: 16:26 |

I found it necessary to write HC a bit of a rant this morning. Basically told them there was more to history than the Knights Templar, Dan Brown, Nostradamus and related doom and gloom. Cant turn the stupid channel on any more and not see something like that on or coming up. Gets really old.

I haven't seen one of my all time favorite movies mentioned.
Command Decision- Staring Clark Gable. John __________________________ In Memory of Cdm Howard Gilmore and the crew of USS Growler SS-215 Thanks Tambor 198 for the Sig "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" - FDR "Vision, Courage, Determination are our only limitations." |

You are right the HC used to always be on in my house now I just turn the channel since all they have on now is End of the World, Bible, 7 Deadly Sins, ect. Though that thing on last night about the Templars was interesting but I became annoyed when the Holy Grail came into the picture, I about punched the wall again. Off topic from the HC... HOUSE M.D. season 6 premiers tonight on USA and I am definitely watching it. "Your an idiot." He's right you know. Can't wait for the new miniseries coming out this spring...called "The Pacific"
with Tom Hanks directing it should be great. It's gonna get into a lot of gore compared to Band of Brothers. http://www.beyondhollywood.com...pacific-mini-series/ June, '09, July, '09 |

Found a trailer on "The Pacific" it looks awsome the first time someone made a good show on the Pacific. Unless there is a good pacific theater movie out there.

J.L you are a man after my own heart. I was the same way. I found the whole thing very interesting (The Kensington Rune stone) and some of the other things (like the Indian carvings of what was obviously a Norse style ship) on a rock off Lake Michigan in the UP. Im planning on buying that guys book, The Hooked X "Some ships are designed to sink… others require our assistance." Many years ago, early 80s (I think), I saw a movie about the pacific war (or a particular battle) that was unlike any war movie I'd ever seen before. I mean, it was chock full of blood and gore which was something you never saw in war movies back then. It was set on a Pacific island somewhere and some of the U.S. Marines were accompanied by Dobermann-Pinschers which were used in many scenes to flush the enemy out of caves or pits. Quite alot of blood for a movie of that time period (late 70s/early 80s). I haven't seen the movie since then and never found out the name of it but, maybe somebody here will have remembered it. Good lord dont let PETA hear that, they will have fits and then some cute starlet will go nude in protest...hmmm I'll call them right now. Ive not heard of that movie Werner. Werner...I remember Shaka Zulu....Really good series (Kinda' dates us both....
I agree with the general opinion on the HC...There was a time when it was about history. Now it's more speculation than fact, with some wild-a**ed theories thought up by some third-rate historian that's got nuttin' better to do... |
||||
|
Yep, the HC has little to do about factual history anymore. I sure miss the way it use to be. Seems to be concentrating more on different religions creation and end time views. Why interesting, I prefer factual history. Even on the HC forums it's discussed that they have strayed from the course. I think with all the crazy crap going on today all the stuff they play now pulls in higher ratings...everyone wanting to know how it all ends...I just want to watch Civil War shows. Exactly Wolf I just want to watch the war shows (not modern) so I can learn more about them, for example I never was really interested in the American Revolution into a about a year ago (from watching the Patriot) and now that I am interested in it it is a rare thing for the HC to show shows about it. Back to the topic at hand... Trapp I watched a movie with Nicolas Cage (spelling) it was about the fighting on Saipan or what ever that island is called, it had to do with the native american radio operators but I don't know if that is what you are talking about. I suppose it could have something to do with the movie, "The DaVinci Code" starring Tom Hanks. At least, it all started shortly thereafter. While an interesting movie, I also thought it was quite bizarre and unfounded. Still, I do have a deep interest in the Crusades and don't mind watching facts about the Hospitallers, Teutonics or the Knights Templar. Alot of movies don't portray the Templars correctly. The movies portray them as maniacal lunatics intent with killing everyone and starting wars. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even their Saracen adversaries respected them for their tenacity in battle. In fact, most of them were beheaded when captured so that they could never return to battle against the arab tribes. The Knights Templar, for lack of a more precise analogy, were tantamount to today's Special Forces. The Hospitallers, though also tenacious and feared in battles, were more like todays fighting corpsmen. They tended to the sick, wounded and founded a well respected Hospital in Jerusalem. Anyway, I'm getting away from the subject here. The HC needs to be more diverse. I agree that lately, they seem to have zeroed in on a few niche categories. What ever happened to HC Wings? Is that sill on the air? I've only recently got my TV service reactivated earlier this year. Still, haven't watched much of it since 2003. The movie is called Windtalkers.
J.L. if youve gotten into things Revolutionary I highly recommend you get and read 1776 by David McCullough. Anyone else that wants to write HC can do so at this address: thc.viewerrelations@aetv.com "Some ships are designed to sink… others require our assistance."
