FORUM RULES

The rules help us all to be considerate to other members and are easy to follow Smile

Please also read and understand Ubi's Terms of Use

1. Language

  1. Please refrain from using inappropriate language in the forums - no obscenities, vulgarities, expletives, racist terms, offensive name-calling, etc. As a *general* guide, try looking up any word you're not sure about on dictionary.com. If the word is described as 'vulgar', please don't use it. If it comes up as just 'slang' you *should* be OK.
  2. Be considerate in your choice of words. There are members who will be offended, even if they don't say so.
  3. Moderators will watch posts and can edit or delete anything that other forum members may find offensive.
  4. If a moderator edits or deletes your post because you used language not fit for the forums, take it as a first warning. If it keeps on happening, you will be banned.

2. Signatures

New rules originally posted by AudibleKnight, effective 23 Jan 2007:

  • The total size of graphics in the signature, even if it is made up of several individual graphic files, must not exceed a total of 60kb in file size, and all image files together must fit within a 500 pixels wide x 150 pixels tall box.
  • Users may have 4 lines of text (including links), each no more than 80 characters (including spaces) per line. Please note that an empty row with no text is still considered a "line of text".

Finally, please remember that all sig/avatar tests should be performed ONLY in the Test Postings forum.

    Examples:

    1. User has a 500 pixel wide, 150 pixel tall image and four lines of text with no more than 80 characters per line.
Result: ALLOWED. This meets the image restrictions, and the text restrictions.

    2. User has a 500 pixel wide, 150 pixel tall image and two additional "sig sticks" each 19 pixels tall.
Result: NOT ALLOWED. All images combined must be within the 500 pixels wide, 150 tall limit.

    3. User has a 500 pixel wide, 150 pixel tall image and has the following additional text:
    quote:

    I

    Love

    Ubi

    Soft

Result: NOT ALLOWED. The text is using 7 rows (even if there's only text in 4 of them) which is more than the 4 lines of text limit.

    4. User has no images in their sig, and only has 5 lines of text.
Result: NOT ALLOWED. Users are only allowed 4 lines of text.

    3. Avatars

New rules originally posted by AudibleKnight, effective 23 Jan 2007:

  • Avatar should be no bigger than 15kb in file size.
  • Avatar should be 64 pixels wide * 64 pixels tall before the forum auto-resize function.

Finally, please remember that all sig/avatar tests should be performed ONLY in the Test Postings forum.

    4. Images used in Avatars, Signatures and Threads/Posts

    1. Keep them clean and appropriate. Determination of what is clean and/or appropriate is at the sole discretion of the admins and mods.
    2. Violators will not be warned and will be banned. Consider this your first and final warning.
    3. If you think your sig, avatar or image you intend to post may be inappropriate, it probably is, so don't risk a ban over it. This will be strictly enforced, regardless of who the perpetrator is.
    4. Only use JPEG, GIF or PNG image file formats

Use of the swastika in the Silent Hunter forums: (added 11 Dec 2007)

    1. WW2 history and technology subjects are - and always will be - popular and valuable topics of discussion in our forum. Therefore, the incidental display of swastikas in historical WW2 images will continue to be acceptable in such discussions.
    2. The non-European version of SH3 (and certain SH3 game mods) include accurate portrayals of swastikas on naval flags, aircraft and medals. The same will no doubt be true of next year's SH4 U-boat add-on. The incidental display of swastikas in SH3/SH4 screenshots will continue to be acceptable in discussions about gameplay problems, tips, tactics and mods.
    3. The presence of the swastika symbol in off-topic subjects, unrelated to the game or to WW2 history/technology, is not allowed because such discussions do not provide a relevant historical context. Therefore, swastika symbols can no longer be displayed in a member's signature or avatar.

We respectfully ask that members do not try to find and exploit 'loopholes' in the wording of these rules.

Please contact one of the moderators if you do not fully understand the rules.

    FORUM GUIDES

    1. How to include pictures in your forum posts

To post your images, you need to upload them to an online photo hosting service. Most members use Photobucket - it's user-friendly, quick and free to set up an account:

    http://www.photobucket.com

    * This guide assumes you're using Photobucket to post images *

    1. When you've created your Photobucket account, you can upload images there from your PC. Go to the 'My Album' page, click one of the 'Browse...' buttons (there are several provided so that you can upload a number of images from your PC in one batch) then locate an image on your PC you wish to upload.

(repeat this step if you want to upload more images)

    2. Once you've selected your images(s) from your PC, click the 'Upload' button and wait for the upload to finish.

    3. When the image has finished uploading to your Photobucket account, you will notice underneath each one are some text fields. Click on the 'IMG Code' text below the image - the code will automatically be copied to your clipboard.

    4. Paste that code into your forum post (remember you need to get the code for each image you want to post), like this:

(repeat this step for each uploaded image you want to post)

If you've got it right, the codes you've pasted will display your images after you have submitted your post.

You can always edit your post if you make a mistake (see instructions lower down this page - 'How to EDIT your post')

You may also like to read Messervy's guide to adding images to posts (includes step-by-step screenshots)

    2. How to add an avatar and signature to your forum profile

    * Before you add an avatar or signature, ensure you understand the rules posted above regarding image and file sizes *

To place a pic in your signature do the following:

    • Click the 'Go' drop down menu followed by 'My Space' then 'Profile('1.)

    • Click 'Edit Profile' then scroll down to the 'Signature' section and place the URL of the pic you want to use in the white 'Edit' box (3.) It must look like this:

    • To add an Avatar, do step 1, but after clicking 'Edit Profile' scroll down to the 'Avatar / Picture URL' section and click on 'Edit' (2.) A window will pop up which looks like this:

    • Make sure you select 'URL' for your Custom Avatar (4.) and NOT 'Upload Custom Avatar' or else you'll get a Permissions Error.
    • Click on the 'Select This One' and your image will appear where (5.) is.
After a few seconds, you'll get a confirmation that your avatar has been updated successfully.

    Please Note:

    • You need to ensure that your chosen avatar and signature images are stored on an online image host that allows remote-linking.
    • There are many sites on the internet where you can store your images for free, such as www.photobucket.com, www.imageshack.com or www.tinypic.com.
    • Lnking to images stored on your PC doesn't work.
    • To remove your signature or avatar, follow the steps above but delete the contents of the boxes labelled (3) and (4) in the screenshots above.

    3. How to send a Private Message, or 'PM'

If you're not sure how to send a private message to another forum member or moderator, follow these instructions:

    1. Click on the member's forum name (e.g. where it says VikingGrandad on the left side of this post). A menu should appear.
    2. Choose 'Invite [member name] to a Private Topic'
    3. Fill in the form and submit it. Your message can only be seen by the person you send it to.

If you've got 'notifications' switched on, you will get an e-mail when you get a response to a PM. Otherwise, this is how you can check your PM's, old and new:

    1. Click on the 'Go' button in the top left of every forum page. A menu should appear.
    2. Choose 'My Space' > 'Private Messaging'

    4. How to EDIT your post

You will need to be logged in to do this.

    1. Click the 'Edit/Delete' button in the lower right corner of your post (you need to be logged in to see this button on your posts).
    2. Your post will now open a new window, ready for you to edit.
    3. Make your changes
    4. When you're ready, click the 'Post Now' button (just like you do when creating a new post)

REMEMBER - the changes you make to your post are permanent. An edited thread cannot be reverted back!

    5. You should see that your post has been updated with your changes.

If you need to make further changes, start again at step #1.

Note - If someone posted after you and quoted your post before you edited it, your quoted post will remain unchanged in theirs.

    5. How to DELETE your post

You will need to be logged in to do this.

    1. Click the 'Edit/Delete' button in the lower right corner of your post (you need to be logged in to see this button on your posts).
    2. Click the 'Delete Message...?' link
    3. When asked "Are you sure you want to delete this message?", click 'Confirm'

REMEMBER - Deleting a post is permanent. A deleted post cannot restored!!

    4. You should see that your post has been removed.

Note - If someone posted after you and quoted your post before you deleted it, your quoted post will remain in place in theirs.
