I would have liked the Silversides, since she rests in the next town over, but she has been claimed... Hmmm, are any boats left? Anyone know of a definitive list?
OK, looks like the USS Tautog SS-199 will be my boat of choice; 26 ships sunk for 72,000 tons... A most interesting ship to study. Signature graphic to follow...
I suppose I shall adopt the USS Razorback, seeing how she's now comfortably resting not 30 miles from my home, despite her name not exactly matching the state's mascot. In anycase, always nice to be able to go and visit the real steel, albeit upgraded version of my virtual boat.
I'll take the USS Hammerhead, SS-364 if she's free. (though could someone confirm if she's a Gato (according to Wikipedia) or a Balao (according to the fleetsub list)

I've tried to do some research on that ash. Best I've found is that if ALL the Manitowoc built subs are Gato's, then she is a Gato. I guess it really depends on if they had the 7/8" High Tensile steel hulls like all the other Balaos.
Taking everything you see on the internets with a grain of salt and that this is quick and dirty, I would say it was a Gato.
Though its numbering sequence and date of construction suggest Balao, the Navy lists her as a Gato and Uboat.net at leasts mentions a reasoning it could be.
The difference in the two appears to be as Whiskea said: "By late 1943 the Gato Class was replaced by the Balao Class. They were practically identical except for a thicker hull and use of stronger steel which increased the rated depth another 100 feet."
----------------------------------------------------------------------- 'round here, she's always on my mind.
