Any news on final release?

And I was shocked to see this one so far back in the page index.

Not for awhile yet. What's keeping it is two things:

1.) I've taken to rewriting the campaign files to make the traffic more historical, along the routes they took. (this is acutally alot of work)

2.) Waiting on Captain America to finish his officer country interior. He works on his own schedule, (It's his mod). Frankly im in no hurry for him to finish as it gives me time to continue rewriting the campaign and not feel rushed.

Main reason i have the next updates on TMO as a "public beta" is because
a.) Its there if you want to play it, and it is as stable as my usual "official releases". if i kept everything underwraps, youd never see any of it.

b.) When i do say "it's done", it's my intention to make it my final release. So i want to make sure i can get all the kinks out before then. I simply don't have time to find all the kinks myself.

Thanks Ducimus.

I was just curious, and am in no way pushing for release.

Wink2

My current career still has a year left in the war so I have a lot to do yet as well.

This new campaign im working on will be interesting i think. You won't find many single merchants in the open ocean. Most will be along the coast. Convoy's are going to be much larger. Up to 25 ships in some cases. Escort count is going to go up too. Big Grin

More historical? Now I like the sound of that. Big Grin BTW, how many ships were there in a typical Japanese merchant convoy and, what was the ratio of DDs to merchants?

I've been doing more reading here:
http://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/USSBS/IJO/index.html

It really varies. It all depends on what they had available. If you check the Tabular record of movments on combinedfleet.com, you'll see that they even had some escort carriers assigned to some convoys.

I wouldn't have believed a 25 ship convoy tell i read it here.
http://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/USSBS/IJO/IJO-57.html

quote:
In early August 1944, 1 had a twenty five ship convoy protected by 4 or 5 vessels, heading south in latitude 31°30' North, longitude 130° East. Between 0400 and 0500 in the morning before dawn one collier of 2 to 3,000 tons was sunk by submarine torpedo attack.

In early September I was convoying 11 ships from FORMOSA to MANILA. A radio dispatch had been received from the headquarters of the First Escort Squadron at TAKAO giving the position of two enemy submarines about 80 miles apart across my track. I laid the course to go between them. At about 0330, after moonrise, in position approximately latitude 20° North, longitude 121* East, two ships of 3 to 4,000 tons were sunk by a torpedo attack believed to have been delivered by a submarine within the convoy between the center and right hand column.

Wow, the IJN using escort carriers. Now, that's exciting! I've read how resourceful the Japanese were in copying tactics or hardware that the allies used, especially when it proved to be very effective against them. The PT Boats are a prime example, though the IJN used them mostly for Kamikaze attacks. Amazing, that I've known about that website (Combined Fleet) for some time now but, forgot just how much information they cover.
If you're thinking on modeling those convoys according to actual accounts, count me in. BTW, once you're finished (not that I'm trying to rush you), will you incorporate all the current patches into one download?

Not really. More generic and flexible. Research wise, im looking at it this way:

Did the Jap's do this? If so, was it a common or rare occurance?

Convoy entries are going to be random in size. One convoy spawn might be 4 or 6 ships, or 11 ships. This way it varies every time. Same for escort count. Might be 3, might be 6. Escort carrier's in convoys will be a rare thing as they didn't have that many.

In theme, convoys will spawn more frequently, with less ships (3 or 4) with little to no escort in 41/42.

By 43, i'll ramp that up to 4 to 6 ships with 2 to 3 escorts, and spawn them less frequently. By 44, 6 to 25 with 4 to 8 escort, and spawn them less frequentlyl yet. Concurrently, single merchant traffic will also spawn less frequently throughout the war as convoy sizes increase.

BTW, shipping will be based off this map.

Dunno where it came from, but someone on subsim posted it, and it looks authentic enough to me to use.

As an aside, the version of RSRDC that I have with my TMO install had an escort carrier in a large convoy west of Manila in August of 1944.

I only had two torps left so only got a small modern composit, then got swarmed by 3 or 4 escorts. Took me over 2 hours in real time to get away. I was sweating bullits the whole time. Creeping at a half knot flirting with 545 ft depth and still getting my bell rung. No casualties though and I made it home.

Whew.

That sounds quite reasonable and, as a matter of fact, the question you posed follows the same reasoning that I have concerning such interrogations. I'm sure that when it doesn't account for exploits, it's fairly accurate but, when they start tallying the numbers or boasting of newly applied technologies, my red flag tends to go up.
BTW, did you happen to notice the crude but, quite effective, technical drawing at the bottom of the "Combined Fleet" page you posted? It certainly gets the point across, as a visual aid, I mean.

I have no idea why i keep going. But.... the time lapse between 1.7 and 1.9 has been a fairly lengthy one. Big Grin

As to SH5, i have no intention of moving to Sh5. yeah im sure the eyecandy will be nice, but it's just too soon for me for another uboat game. I had been waiting for a PTO game for a little over a decade. Will be another year or three before im ready to walk away from it and try uboats again.

Dang, I've been away too long. Can't wait to finish my career and load up.

Haven't checked, but with your traffic changes do you recommed using RSRD. I'll go see if Lurker has updated yet. One thing I do hate about RSRD is the constant single ships, so even if it works with 1.9, wonder if it's needed. Certainly want the added ships that RSRD has.

I've got so many added ships, can't wait to see what's been added.

Uploaded one of the optional mods i've been procrastinating on. It's all of Foobar's sub skins that i reworked a little. This is set up to be a total skin replacement.

At any rate,

- compiled Foofighters subskins
- reduced size of skins from 2048 to stock dimension of 1024
- added back missing textures
- made file adjusments so MS/32 upgrade should work properly.
- changed shade/ tone of deck/AA guns to be a better match with new skins.
