A lot of people are posting with the black screen problem while using the Intel Graphics chip, this problem is caused because the Intel Graphics chip as it is designed for office work and not gaming.

This chip will not work with the majority of recent games as the Intel chip lacks the hardware support to run the games, causing problems with rendering of graphically intensive games.

the only fix for this problem is to set all the graphics detail in game to their lowest possible settings as this will allow the software more time to compensate for the lack of hardware support.

if the problem still occurs on the lowest possible game settings the only way you can play the game is with a hardware update, but this is only possible on desktop PC's as laptops cannot be upgraded.

Well I tried everything you suggested. Lowest settings and all. I can see the video clips, but when I get to the actual game...it stops and I get an error message from windows, which only says that windows it trying to find the error and fix it...but closes the game anyways.
I've tried it with and without the CD. I've also got the 1.71 update.

There's a newer video driver from Intel the 965 chipset in your laptop:- downloadcenter.intel

The Sony site just has the original video driver, laptop makers are often slow in updating the drivers, mainly because they customise them to work better with the features on the laptop.

that didnt work for me...it said that the driver was not validadted for my computer...and that I should obtain the appropriate driver from the manufacturer.
I've got all the settings on extra low, and the videos work for me and everything; its just that when I get to the game itself.....it all closes.

that is because all the videos are pre-made and are basically like watching a DVD (doesn't take any processing power) then when you actually try to load the game area the graphics chip need's to render it in real time and due to the massive lack of power in the intel chips they will fail here very often.

this is the reason intel chips are unsupported in 99% of games as they are not really designed for gaming they are designed as a cheap alternative to allow offices to do work without needing a dedicated video card.

if the above fixes don't work the simple fact is your laptop cant run the game and there is no way to make it run.

I managed to complete the game (including the Eastern Realm) on an intel 4500MHD Media Accelerator but it got very very jerky at times even with everything set at low. As an ex Settlers fan ( i thought i had grown out of it lol) I have now rediscovered The settlers and I am selling my laptop, buying a new one with a dedicated Graphics card in preperation of The Settlers 7. You can get a laptop now the acer 6930G which had the Geforce 9300M card in it for £450 GBP. For £499 you can get the Acer Aspire 5738 with Radeon HD 4570 I really like the look of that card but my budget is limited
