Hey everyone,

I have seen this series on store shelves for years, but I never got into them, hell I never even picked one up to look at it. When I spotted a demo for HoK a few weeks back I thought why not, downloaded it and absolutely loved it, so the second it was available here I picked it up. I have spent the better part of the last 3 weeks playing HoK, finally finishing the last mission today. It was awesome!

I could take my time with my settlement building, harvest resources until they came out of my ears, and only when I was good and ready did I have to create an army and go to battle. The story was terrible, though, and the voice acting drove me a little batty, but for some strange reason I loved the time I spent with this game.

I got onto the 'net to see what others were saying about it, and was surprised to see how poorly received it was by longtime fans of the series. Intrigued, I thought I'd try a demo of a previous Settlers to see how different it was to HoK, but before I could I spotted Settlers IV Gold for the ridiculously low price of R60 (the equivalent of $10), so I bought it.

Wow, talk about night and day. HoK was nothing like this game! At first, I was horribly intimidated by the inscrutability of the interface and the way that clicking all over did absolutely nothing, but I stuck with it and once I got past the 12(!) tutorials, I had a better idea of what was going on.

As of now I am only on the 2nd Roman mission and getting my **** handed to me by what look like thousands of little blue buggers, but I am slowly getting the hang of how the game works, and I am sure that by this time tomorrow I will have beaten them back. Seems I expand too quickly, try to do too much at once while neglecting basic resource collection, so I will be taking it a little slower next time. I just hope the 2 hour mark where I usually get attacked is not pre-set by the computer...

But that's neither here nor there. This game is simply INCREDIBLE!! It is logical and minutely detailed, and the amount of micro-management required is enormously challenging, but WOW, what a blast! Finally, an intelligent game that I can sink my teeth into! And just looking at the sheer amount of missions available with the Gold edition, this was the most bang for my buck I think I have ever had!

I just wanted to let you all know that I am now a definite Settlers convert, although to be frank I am happy I got into HoK first and then Settlers IV, I am sure the disappointment of HoK sent more than a few hardcore Settlers fans into fits of rage. Still, if I can get into S4 this late in the game, there must be hope for others. It's just a pity the patience and intelligence required to truly appreciate such a complex, beautiful game, are sorely lacking in today's gaming audience.

Ah well, it's their loss, isn't it?

Great - another convert. Smile

You should be able to keep playing this game for years, as there are hundreds of maps at http://www.siedler-maps.de/maps/index.htm These are maps made by other players.

For walkthroughs, hints and tips - www.settlersgang.com is a good site.

Last night I came close to beating back the computer player on the second Roman map, but of course the first wave he sends after me is but the tip of the iceberg. I withstood the first wave, but seconds later he sent in what looked like hundreds of his soldiers and annihilated me with extreme prejudice.

Since this was at 11pm and starting again to focus on my military strength earlier and not expanding so soon was going to take me a good few hours, I decided to leave that until today. Now I am at work and all I can think about is getting home and trying a different strategy... **** this game is addictive!

PLUS, I am only playing on Easy... I shudder to imagine how tough this game would be on Hard!

Well no not really! It's ours too, no more real Settlers!
People dont really backtrack like you and find a previous game,as good ,if not better!!

You happen to be a perfect candidate for our debate!!! http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=340109713&m=5551093892

You have tried, and liked HoK as a stand alone game, but preferred Settlers IV Gold. This is what I have been saying!! Hok is good, as a game, but it is not Settlers, Settlers is much more addictive and playable!!Who cares if it takes 4 years to produce the new game,..it takes almost that long to complete in easy, then hard mode, and all the missions in both modes etc!!

If a newbie (I hope you dont mind me calling you that!) rates original Settlers better than Hok after playing Hok first, then our point is justified!!!

As much as I would like to bash the new "Settlers" team for their decidedly un-Settlers-like work, I can't. I've been thinking about it, and I have realised that the only reason I got into Settlers IV in the first place was because I had played and enjoyed HoK. I know that I am now convinced of SIV's superiority, however despite its now-obvious glory I had not once considered picking it up in all the time I've been playing games (going on 16 years now).

So, while HoK might be the anti-christ to all loyal Settlers fans, the fact of the matter is that at least one person has been exposed to the series only as a result of contact with the latest game. Maybe there are others doing the same, and maybe we all owe HoK a debt of gratitude for encouraging more gamers to seek out earlier Settlers games.

There is a little light at the end of the tunnel, but it's not really fair, is it, because long-time fans get no satisfaction and the only person anywhere near happy about this is someone who never gave the Settlers series much attention until now. So on that score, I hate to tell you this but the devs have succeeded in doing what they set out to do - create a wider audience for the Settlers brand. Of course, this worked in reverse, as in they have created (at least in me) increased interest in all Settlers games prior to HoK's release and a deep suspicion that never again will the Settlers walk the virtual world in anything other than a Warcraft type game. So while the new publisher succeeded, it wasn't completely what they were looking for, because any new Settlers game that comes out from the same studio will be met with as much derision from me as it will from long-time fans.

It's a big lose-lose situation for everyone except me, because I now have a new series to get into, but from the wrong end, and that doesn't make anyone rich.

Sucks, doesn't it?

Glad you decided to try settlers4,you can now maybe see why there has been so much resentment and anger thrown towards HOK.That aside I have found lots more new players in BBGC playing S4 since HOK was released,so maybe it has done something positive after all.

Forgive me if this is in the wrong catagory, but what do i need to build to win the first Roman mission in the Settlers add on. I've conquered all the castles and killed all my enemies but it kept saying something about bridgehead. What does that mean?

I answered this just the other day for you in this thread http://forums.ubi.com/eve/foru...501096787#4501096787

Use your ferries to take soldiers to enemy territory till you have sufficient numbers to bring up the "You Win" sign.

I liked S4 very much, probably the most of the series, however playing it today only produces that huge black box that seems to be the plague of the game with modern hardware and drivers so S6 is my next big favorite.

That black box is too annoying to play with on the screen to me, although I know others that are perfectly capable of ignoring it.
