hmmm, never had that one before.

I'd try switching the virtualbox from fullscreen to windowed to fullscreen and see if that works.

Do you have another source for the second file download for the virtual machine. I have tried downloading it twice but each time i try to extract it I get an error message saying "Could not open 'filename' as archive"

That's correct.

You only extract the first archive, which in turn extracts all the others as one big extract.

Hi, I tried everything but I cant get it work with posted here linux. I cant install Guest Additions because of some errors (like headers not compiled) and when I try to run Settlers I got the message "Cannot initialize graphic interface" or something like that.

It is the same message as in Windows guest in Virtualbox.

BTW. Virtualbox support Direct3d for some time, and why Settlers still doesnt't work on WINXP?

Hi
I have 3 small problems, I hope someone can help me with. I have used the 9 step guide and can now play settlers 4, but there are 3 small isues:

1. sometimes its like the mouse "hits a wall" and then it won't go beyond that point.

2. When in the game, I can't use the kayboard.

3. I can only play the game in a window, not full screen.

Hope someone can help me

-- Because S4 appears to check for your 3d capabilities by checking if AGP Textures are enabled in dxdiag. But the wine d3d driver thing now in VB doesn't enable this feature, so SIV thinks you have no 3d capabilities and won't run. Ironic isn't it, that VB will run the likes of Unreal Tournament in all its 3d hardware accelerated gaming, but not S4.

I should start again from the basic archives you extracted, and reinstall VB (after deleting all its folders from your username folder).
===========================================================================

3) There's a key to make VB fullscreen, something like right ctrl + (F?) I'm afraid I forget.

2) Sounds like something in Windows has grabbed control.

1) Fix 3 and 1 should follow.

Chief Smile (btw I don't really use VB anymore so all help is now provided from memory..... which might not be too accurate Wink (I upgraded to a radeon and also don't do much with settlers anymore).

Is it only the 8 series cards that cause this really? I just bought an Nvidia 275 GTX video card, will I not have the black box with this new video card?

I'd experiment to find out for myself, but it would take me hours to find the CD for S4 again, I just don't know where I last put it. So if somebody knows if the black box is missing with the 275 Nvidia card please let me know and I'll then go dig up the CD.

Thanks,

I infrequently visit the forum now, but anyway....

KernelPanics - try an older version of virtualbox, could be a corrupt download of course (though since you got to step6 id say its unlikely).

Nvidia have removed backwards compatibility features from all their hardware since series 8, in otherwords every new nvidia card from now on will have the blackbox bug.

I notice that rapdishare have now deleted part1 of the two-part download.

If you only managed to get part2 (which is still active) then this would explain all your problems.

Sadly however I don't have a backup of either parts so you only have two options available...

1) Ask here if anyone still has a backup of the two files, and would they upload them back to rapidshare or an alternative download mirror.

2) Download ubuntu, and install it in virtual box.

Chief. (on a new account name you may have noticed).

If you re-upload part1 then I can d/l it and look into it.

However it's been too long since I used this method myself and I can't think what to suggest without seeing the problem happening for myself.

Okay, downloaded and working fine for me.

However I notice now that step four is incorrect so here is the new step four.

(STEP FOUR) Once you have the OS downloaded.

Load 7zip, and make sure the explorer view is displaying the .001 and .002 files. (navigate to their stored location if it isn't).

Now go to File>Combine, and select a location to save the combined file to.

Now, open the combined file and extract the files from the archive to the following folders (depending on which version of windows your PC runs):

Vista (and above) Users: C:\Users\YOUR-USER-NAME\.VirtualBox

XP Users: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR-USER-NAME\.VirtualBox

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

vidraa, I should delete the .Virtualbox folder before you try again, just to force VB back to the default settings.

I was successful with the 2nd to last VB version (because a new version just came out and I havn't bothered updating to it Wink).

Ok.
If i do it with your step four version, all are the same. When I start up S4-UBL it write Kernel panic.
I deleted .Virtualbox before. I used VB 2.1.0.
Maybe the problem is with my operation system? Windows reinstall can maybe fix it? (I will not reinstall windows, cuz i have many data on my pc.)
I'm vista user.
Thanks again for your patience. Wink

I'm completely stumped then Smile

Maybe try d/ling part 2 again (part 1 must be fine as it worked for me).

I can't see it being your OS, and for one game reinstalling windows would be a bit extreme (mind you, I'd do it if it were me Big Grin)

I know I'm clutching at straws here, maybe uninstall VB as well and d/l the newest version (including making sure to check your program files folder and deleting the sun folder left behind and the .virtualbox folder again.
