Create a new (virtual) harddrive and set it to slave in the virtualbox settings, then install S4 to that driver as opposed to the linux installation drive Smile

Unfortunately I dont think the game is going to work under this method, been trying a different method but it isnt working at all well. Asked for help on VB forums but so far no replies, if you're experienced enough, try knoppix or ubuntu etc etc etc and set it up yourself.

Or if someone has the old original (rather largish) image, they could host that somewhere since it did work, but had more hoops to jump through.

I don't, I use an intel gma950 for s4 Razz

Basically all you need to run Settlers 4 is:

VirtualBox
A newly created virtual PC with settings you choose.
A linux live cd (smaller the better).
VirtualBox Guest Additions Installed
WINE installed.

~or~

A bootable usb key, with enough space on it for an s4 installation + linux live OS. (Also this method means your 8series card will be used without the black boxes).

~ or if you're Pennyuk ~

VirtualBox Заново созданный фактически ПК с установками вы выбираете. Компактный диск в реальном маштабе времени Линукс (более малый лучшее). Добавления гостя VirtualBox установили ВИНО установило. Razz Razz Razz (babelfish).

hi everybody. I have problems with following these steps. I've stucked at installing on guest linux the Virtualbox Guest Additions.

It says that I have to install some build and header but I am real beginner in linux.

I read somewhere that i need to use Aptitude command to install this, but non of apt, aptitude, apt-get or dselect are avaialble in the provided linux version.

I would appriciate if someone could tell me how to proceed with installing VirtualBox Guest Additions.

using a virtual pc with windows on it should accomplish the same thing, since it is the virtualized video card which fixes your black box problem.

Yes, but not everyone has a retail version of windows to use Smile

I'm currently working on an updated version, to work out of the box (as much as can be done) I'll post it when it's ready.

I have now updated the guide on the first page to represent the changes required to the installation of the newly released virtual machine.

The new virtual machine is now uploaded to rapidshare in two parts (both of which are required).

I have tried to make this as much a "Runs-Out-Of-The-Box" experience as I could manage, however there are still steps that must be done by the user wishing to play Settlers IV without the blackboxes.

I have fully tested the guide and everything works just fine for me, so I ghope it will for you.

Note also that the latest machine requires the latest (as of 17th Dec. 2008) Virtual Box installed.

Hope you have fun playing without the black box issues.

One final thing, the latest wine now allows the in-game movies to play.

Chief. Smile

Well ChiefWhosm, I've done an install of Kubuntu 8.1, NVidia drivers, Wine, and -of course- SettlersIV. Working pretty darn well. The KDE desktop steals the ALT key, but fixed that in the Window Behaviour/Window Actions/Modifier Key setting.
Only two things to fix now - can't select Hardware Landscape rendering, and the menu screen fonts are slightly odd.
But very playable!

You probably won't be able to select hardware rendering on a Virtual PC
A Virtual PC doesn't use the hardware capabilities of your video card, that's locked to the host OS, instead it just emulates a basic video card in software, which is why you can only play older games on one, as they don't need to make calls to the hardware on the video card.

Yeah, no support for hardware rendering on linux guests.

Windows guests only just have support for it Smile

As to the fonts, probably means you need the MSFonts package (can't remember the name) or the Liberation Fonts by RedHat.

I'm having trouble installing the game in VB, the installer is running really slow, it would probably take a few days to install it but everything else works smoothly. Could anyone help me?

Hi, since you posted on Friday the few days are up so maybe it's installed by now Big Grin

Anyway, in the VB options for the machine there's a setting:

Enable vt-x amd-v

Check it, and then start-up the virtual PC. Hopefully that'll speed you up a bit (or a lot).

I would shut down the virtual pc, and reboot it, and while at its bios area put VB into full screen mode (Right Ctrl + F).

Open up a konsole window (terminal editor, bash, shell - forget the name but its in one of the menus).

Then use the commands... (each followed by return/enter - if the path for the first command is wrong check it out using the file browser).

cd /home/s4/.wine/dri*/B*/T*/Ex*

wine s4_main.exe

The command prompt will show any errors that occur to make it exit unexpectedly Smile
