Installed The Settlers Rise of an Empire (Gold Edition) - just purchases...

Initally, post-install, the music played and nothing happened. Installed the 1.7 patch and things seem to have improved.

I get to the initial Eastern Realm screen and am told of my mission. I click on Mission Briefing which I presume should take me to the throne room. The "room" I get to is blank. Well - mostly black, but with a title image, some dividing lines, some text and buttons on the bottom right. I can hear the sound, but no main image. I can click on the screen and scroll through knights and see their details, but I cannot see the first images.

I tried changing my video settings to Default and changing my resolution to a lower setting, but the Default settings do not seem to be saved. All the "sliders" on the settings stay at the SLOW (left) side.

(FYI: Initially my sound wasn't working either but changing the Sound settings to the Default ones fixed this issue.)

Any suggestions?

It sounds as though you may have an unsuitable video card, or badly outdated video drivers, post a dxdiag, it may help.

Your computer doesn't have a dedicated video card fitted, and is just using the Intel GMA 3000, video chip, which is part of the G965 chipset on your motherboard.

I think you may have trouble getting the game to display properly with that chip, as unlike the later GMA X3000 on the P965 chipset, yours lacks some of the hardware the game uses, and instead emulates the missing hardware Vertex Shaders in software.

All I can suggest is basically what you have already tried, using the lowest possible screen resolution, and absolutely minimum game graphics settings, this sometimes has been known to work with that chipset, but isn't 100% successful in all cases.

I'm uncertain of the exact model of Dell Dimension you have, but given the CPU you have, it may well be the E520, which has a PCI-Express x16 video card expansion slot, which would you to fit a dedicated video card that has the hardware that most games now rely on.

If your computer is the E520, as far as I know it is fitted with a 305watt power supply, so you may need to look for a video card with low power requirements, as upgrading a power supply on some Dell models can be a nightmare due to non industry standard connections and wiring.

If it's the same E520 as in this Product sheet from Dell, it will have the PCI-Express x 16 slot:

The slot is the black one, marked with the red arrow in this pic:


Dell themselves list that model as available with either the Nvidia GeForce 7300, or the ATI Radeon X1300 video cards as options, so models of card around that spec should be ok with the power supply unit fitted in the computer.

If you look at the range of cards available on this site---> Tiger Direct you'll see that a suitable card can be found for as little as $30

just a suggestion but the Geforce 8600 would probably work as well, as my friend put one in a very similar dell and it worked perfectly.

just great i have a inspiron 1525 laptop and this game wont work, have had more complex games work ok but not this one. as the first poster i get blank screens.. Plus it keeps telling me theres updates but none, and the latest update is too old yet im only on update 1.6...
