This is the current solution from another thread

After Patch 1.5 is installed, locate the s6patch.ini in the PROGRAMFOLDER on your HARDDISK (No, please, not the programfolder in your Startmenu).
Its likely to be found in "Program Files\Ubisoft\The Settlers - Rise of an Empire\bin\
Edit "TagesDisc" in "TagesOnline"
(When using vista, you may need to start the editor as Administrator)

If you previously patched the game via Autoupdate, download the Patch 1.5 manually.

Install it manually. Yes, over the already patched game again.

That worked for nearly all Forum Users till now.

There are also some incompatibilities with Alcohol and Daemon Tools, especially older versions. Try to uninstall them or update to the latest version, this should fix the issues also.

Hi guys

Yesterday (Apr 7th) I bought for my son and tried to install Settlers Rise Of An Empire.

Of course, I'm here as a result of failed install, "please insert original....."
I registered to get tech support with frustrating results, so.. I had a look around
and here I am !

OK I hope you gurus can give better advise than
"Jason" in tech support.

I've tried all the advise you guys have posted here to no avail.

Manually AND allowed auto updates after install

Tried 4, yes 4 different optical drives
Asus, Pioneer, Lite-on and Sony/Optiarc

Tried the re-script of the file s6patch.ini which found the manual update and asked me for an activation code !! I don't want another activation code.. There's an unlock code on the manual which should be the END !!!!

Let me quote 'Jason'

Response (Jason) - 04/07/2008 05:42 PM

You will need to download and install the patches for this game from our website at http://support.ubi.com in the game patches section to resolve this problem.

Now.. I detailed the fact that I'd install patch 1.5 in my initial support request !

Does he mean I have to install ALL the patches ?

Or has he actually read my support request ?

So before my kid asks me for the thousandth time
"Is it working yet?" Can you guys help me ? PLEASE.

The whole object of doing that, is to use the online activation, so that the copy protection doesn't need to check the disc in the drive in order to make sure you have a genuine game.
If you complete the activation, you can put the disc back in the case, as the whole game is installed on your hard drive.
The code on the manual is used both as your key for online play, (and as you haven't been able to run the game yet, you haven't used it) and as part of the activation process, the activation requires you to both enter the key on the manual, and get an activation code from the server, as it still needs to verify if you have a genuine game or not.

The same thing is happening to me - I tried all the things that Gariarto did, and nothing works. In fact, if I modify the s6patch.ini to read TagesOnline, enter my CD-KEY, it then says that it is an invalid key, when in fact it is not. Getting very frustrated here. Here is the response I got from Jason:

tim,

our website at http://support.ubi.com in the game patches section to
resolve this problem.

Are the support staff even reading the emails? What do I need to do if Ubisoft wont even accept my CD-KEY. Heck, I'll mail you the back cover of my instruction book and original receipt, just let me play the game I paid for!

OK, Last evening I did the manual update and it went to go register online, and hopefully, do the online activation so I don't need the disk.
It wouldn't go through, repeatedly kept timing out. Occasionally instead of a time-out, the connection was "Refused by server" After 45 mins of this I gave up for the evening.

Today I try again only to be told that my serial number is invalid.

That, my friend is the last straw..

This is a little computer game for !@#$%^ sake !
I'm done wasting my time.

Anyway, ball season is starting.. My boy can get some healthy air and excersise instead.

Geez..

Thanks for your help guys, I'm done.

How do you activate The Settlers online?

And the final answer is..

Response (Jason) - 04/09/2008 04:40 PM
Ubi Soft cannot provide refunds or otherwise process returns for credit of any kind other than an identical product replacement. Any product refund request must occur at the place of purchase, as the individual retail outlets set their own refund policy.

So.. since I opened it already to find it doesn't work, I'm screwed right ? !! Retailers stopped refunding opened software years ago for obvious reasons.

Never again. Anyone got a download link for a working pirate copy ? HAHA !! I have the original so I'm legal.

Geez, gimme a break. Good luck guys !

@Gariarto -

I feel your pain. What is such a shame is that software makers are so concerned with piracy that they are forgetting about their honest consumers, who ultimately get burned and then go out and download a cracked copy from some bit-torrent site, because, after all, they spent money on a game and they want to play it.

Meh, sorry. I was lazy and didn't try running the game again after following the instructions. Sorry about the previous posts.

Oh yeah, and it says I have an invalid CD key. Can't say I'm surprised...

You and me both and however many others. One thing that puzzles me is that this whole thing is supposed to be because we don't have "new"
optical drives. Across my household we have access to 4. The oldest is around 8 months.
Yes, I actually checked the build dates on the drives' labelling. The newest was built in Feb.

So.. Do you think that Ubisoft would be forthcoming as to exactly WHICH current drives available DO work ? All I've had so far is a statement that "certain" ones won't work.

How about you fortunate ones who have enjoyed the game legitimately share what optical drive installed it for you ? And just for interest sake, how old it is ?

I've already seen one smart-ass make un-encouraging comments to someone who went out and bought a 'new' drive, only to find that didn't work either.

Well, to satisfy your curiosity mine is a SONY DVD RW DW-G120A
But it isn't always the drive that can cause the error, it's also the presence of any software that can be used for copying a disc, or making a disc image, and it isn't just the obvious ones like Daemon tools or alcohol that can conflict with the copy protection, even certain versions of Nero can cause it.
If you have both a DVD rom and a DVD writer, try running the game from the writer, as Securom may be fooled into thinking you're trying to copy the disc.
That's why the option to verify the disc online is included, in order to allow people who may have a perfectly legitimate use for disc imaging and burning software, to run the game, the disc is used purely as a security check, as the entire game is already installed
What does puzzle me though, is why so many of you are being rejected for having an invalid key, I could understand this in the case of a used copy of the game as the key will already have been used, but everyone getting their key rejected can't be using a key that's already been registered?

Thanks for the info on the drive. According to info on the 'net your model first made it's review appearance in Apr 2006. So much for needing newer drives.
After doing some more fishing around (this problem is spread all over these forums under different thread titles isn't it) I'm going to try 3 things.

*I use Nero 8. I'll uninstall it and try again.

*I have 2 burners installed, I'll disconnect one and try again.

*I'll install a CD speed controller and see if a slower read speed works

And of course a combination of all 3

I don't have and never have had, any kind of what was it ? "CD mounting software" ? So that can't be it.

As far as the CD key rejection on their server goes, I can only surmise it rejects repeated attempts to verify. Calling it used whether or not the activation code was successfully issued or not. As I said before, I tried to go this route but kept getting very short spanned time-outs (Page cannot be displayed etc) then the next day the server must have been operating better, accepted my connection and had enough info previously to log that I'd already used the key. It seems to have no ability to know if
activation was successful or not.

BTOG46 your location says Near the cold North Sea. I'm an ex Sheffield guy currently in upstate New York. Where are you on the East coast ?

Thanks for your continued replies.

I'm up in the North East, in Tyne and Wear.
The cold North Sea reference, is partly a location and partly a memorial for my Cousin, he died when the Tornado he was flying was lost on a shake down flight over the North Sea, in preparation to the squadron deploying for the first Gulf War.

At first I couldn't load the game and I followed all the steps, but I am now getting the same invalid key error as everyone else.

No good news yet I'm afraid..

*Uninstalled Nero 8 and cleaned up any remnant registry entries.
*Used 'Nero Drivespeed' to hold the read speed down to a stately 4x
*Ran only the new ASUS DRW 1814BL DVDRW as an IDE master
As an added just in case, I made sure my ASPI drivers are up to date.

All this together made no difference. As usual it comes to the point you can click PLAY on the front menu, it reads the disk for 10 secs or so then asks for the original disk. Again.. sigh.. By the way, the disk itself is in pristine condition, not the slightest blemish.

BTOG46 - Howay lad !!It's been a long time since I heard a dialect from your toon !

Please accept my condolencies for your cousin.

Can anyone tell me more about this daemon tools software thats been discussed here ?
Could I use it with the original and would it prevent the install messing up on
the part where it tries to check the copy protection ? My son wouldn't be playing it
online, just single player. Can it be made to do that ?
