How to escape from the city? My knight keeps getting killed and I have no way of escaping the stone gates

You can open the gates with your soldiers

Guess I did that, cause after much clicking my knight managed to escape.
But how DO I use the soldiers to open gates? |

|
Select one of your two soldier battelions u start off with. Go to the gate nearest to you. The mouse will change into a opening gate. press the RMB...presto...open gate.
Move your knight and the other battelion to the other side of the wall, and say bye bye to your first borns who will be slaugthered holding the gate open for you. Last time i tried to get that last battelion out of the gate house the gate closed again so he couldn't get through. |

I've found that if you just move the knight the other side of the gate he charges back in like a fool to save his men. The only way I got him out was by sending him straight to the northern settlement.
